Will Apple Bring Out A Fix For Ios4's General Cr*pness?

It may run great on your shinny new iPhone 4, but on my 3G its rubbish, and a restore does no good, it should never have been released for the 3G.

Will apple release a fix for this sluggishness or do we 3G owners just have to make do?

I hope so and fast.

I'm looking at jailbreaking my phone so I can restore it to 3.1.2.

Is there already and called iPhone 4?
Being serious I am sure they could offer a rollback pretty quick.

It is possible to install 3.1.3 but iTunes keeps torturing you to update

I imagine the increased income from iAds means they might have pushed the barriers too far.

I am surprised that certain people have not yet been here to tell us that OS4 is perfect* and those who have complaints are not representative of everyone.

(*perfect may not mean what everyone thinks it means)

Shame to hear you're having problems with iOS4 on your iPhone 3G. Apple offer updates for as many previous phones as they can. These updates contain many updates and improvements to the phone and all for free (the 3G getting brand new features despite being 2 years old). This shows exceptional value for money and support.

If, however, you feel your phone is sluggish due to running an OS with features that it wasn't initially designed for, and you feel this is detrimental to your user experience - you can always downgrade using one of the 6,000 guides available on the Internet.

Ios4 ran pretty slow on my Iphone 3G just like the the previous 3.1.3 Firmware the phone was sluggish at points and froze up aswell, I can't really say I'm missing that phone though glad I recycled it when my Iphone 4 came.

When 2G iphone users had the same issue when OS3 came out I knew well enough to not bother upgrading to 4 on my 3G.

Some folks who set it up as a new phone rather then form a restore (which is always recomended) have reported better performance.

I was of the 'Apple knew best' mindset when I downloaded iOS 4.0. I didn't expect a sluggish menu system and a third of my apps to become unplayable.

I removed all my music, videos, pictures and apps this evening to see if that would make a difference. Nope.

The Apple-supported cure: buy an iPhone 4
The complaining, anti-iPhone mob's cure: jailbreak it

What problems are people finding with ios4 on a 3G? Mine seems ok. I agree it seems sluggish compared to an iPhone4 or even an 3GS, but i haven't noticed a difference after updating.

My 3GS is a complete mess. The entire MMS capability is gone. It drops my router for 8 hours over night and don't get me started on the 3G network reception. I use the YouTube app daily but most videos won't load.

It's going to one of those companies that offer money for your phone for £250 and I'm getting a 4 as soon as humanly possible.

It's an absolute mess of an iOS for any phone but an iPhone 4.

It's buggered my iPod touch as well, the battery life is awful, it's slow as hell and crashes way too often.

Have you tried a restore rather than an upgrade? My 3GS and the 3GS's of three of my friends are absolutely fine after the upgrade.

I've tried everything I can think of. I've restored, then I deleted the iOS file and put it in DFU and restored. I tried a fix for the MMS problem but it didn't work. Every time I stick the phone in iTunes I get a carrier update. Some of my apps don't work but that's just the developers being really slow updating them.

It's really annoying. Just one of those things I guess.

I dislike the new operating system too. Too many things now crash and it's noticeably slower. Pfffft. (ipod touch 8 gb)

It says here 'almost everyone who purchases a new phone will be an existing iPhone user.

No rush for an unacknowledged fix then.

It runs very fast on the iPhone 4 with no crashes. If Apple didn't allow old iPhones to install this update there would have been complaints so it was a no win situation.

I didn't really think anything of this until a day back - he'd downgraded from iOS 4 on his 3G. Issue is down to memory - the 3G just doesn't have sufficient free ram. 128meg vs the 256 meg of the 3GS and the 512 meg in the iPhone 4 make a huge difference.

It must be difficult for Apple - in ways this is similar to what Nokia have had on some (not all) of their recent offerings (primarily the N97). In the attempt to put more features into the OS its chomped away at the available resources, which are effectively marginal on the 3G when used with iOS4.

Only Apple could, and would, start offering software upgrades for free (as most, if not all, other companies do anyway) and then start bragging about how awesome they are for doing so.

I heard iOS4 runs horribly on the 3G. I guess it's how Apple closes the coffin on old models. It's not all bad from Apple. My past experience with Nokia shows that newer updates for there N series phones at time of having recent model usually caused increased slugglishness and crashing with each new update. iOS4 runs like a dream on the 3GS. So I guess the 3GS will still feel like a powerhouse until next Summer when a newer iPhone and iOS is released. If your battery life is suffering then that could be with age and usage. I saw a test recently a iPhone used daily will lose battery performance within 12 months. Not surprised by that though.
