They're making a big deal out of a small story.

Might be because Apple has always been placed on a pedestal because of how secure (apparently) they are and how much more secure and reliable their software is. The fanboys have been the doing the same.

Now that Apple is becoming somewhat popular, weaknesses are beginning to show, and it appears they aren't the wonder company they claimed to be.

That's why no one cares anymore if something MS is hacked - they don't claim to be Fort Knox.

Well I'm not sure it's like that really.

Your statement suggests that Apple are not as secure as people think but that would suggest Apple itself has a flaw, either in iTunes, Mac OS or the App Store itself.

But I've seen no evidence iTunes has been hacked, nor that Mac OS has an exploit, nor that the App Store has been breached in any way.

I think it's more likely that a large number of machines, probably Windows based, have been compromised by a virus of some kind and iTunes login details have been collected that have then been used to order a large number of products from the app store. If that's the case then the weak link is Windows.

The story seems to have died down somewhat, so I suspect it's the later. It didn't take off yesterday and if the breach was as serious as everyones iTunes usernames and passwords leaking or someone coming up with a way to fool the App Store into thinking you're someone else, then it would have been major news.

I doubt this is anything to do with how secure PCs or Macs are. It seems there have been phishing emails to harvest account details of unwary users. See http://www.digitalspy.co.uk/forums/s....php?t=1291675

The real problem here, and it's the same with Amazon, PayPal, GoDaddy, etc etc etc. They all want to keep your card details on file so they can charge it without you having to have it. I can see why they do it but I, personally, think it's the worst thing you can do.

On the plus side for Amazon, Paypal and a few others you can add it when you want to buy stuff and remove it when you're done, which I advocate people do. I haven't found a way to do that with my iTunes account yet and I can't not have an account because I have an iPod touch you need one to download free apps. Which is really annoying and bad form on their part.

One option is to use prepaid scratch cards for iTunes. Which will limit how much an account can be abused and also keep a better control of your spending. Also their support is pretty good, for example they will refund money if you buy something by mistake etc.

Someone posted about the phishing emails last night on this forum.

Thankfully he's not as bewilderingly simple as the people who have actually given their name and card details to a random email.

Phishing emails are hardly Apple's fault - nor do they mean that the App Store has been "hacked".

It seems this is todays "Apple hyperbolic non-issue"

Go into iTunes, log into your account, and click 'Account' then 'Edit Payment Information'. You'll see a list of card types, with your saved card selected, the last choice on the list is 'None'. Select that radio button, and your saved card details are no longer available (i won't say they are removed or deleted, as I have no idea if they are), they can't be used for purchases in iTunes now unless you enter them again.

It's not going to be itunes hacked, probably just some social engineering phishing thing to get peoples passwords. Misreporting much.

As usual the weak link can be found between the chair and the keyboard.

Well agree there is some editorialising going on here, I think it is covering a deeper issue with mis information.

People are told, and you see it on this forum all the time, use Apple products they're safe, secure and friendly when in reality people wishing to steal your money know they won't have any chance of getting stuff on the device so are targeting people in increasingly more complex and elaborate phishing scams.

No they don't just send you an email asking for your password and username they are well designed and plausible fakes often with SSL certs.

Apple and the more vocal members of the Mac community need to start being honest and open about the problems users will face
