Why are people so desperate to get hold of the iphone 4 immediately?

People seem to be constantly queuing in long queues outside mobiel phone shops to get hold of these phones. Not quite sure why people are so desperate to get one that they will queue for hours. The iPhone 4 isn't a massive step up from the 3GS, unless you count the screen, which admittedly does seem a lot better. Surely 3GS owners especially can't be that desperate to upgrade that they will queue for hours and hours?

Who says they're all 3GS owners?

Most of them are probably 2G/3G owners looking to upgrade now their contract is up or indeed new users swayed by the reviews.

I queued as a new iPhone user because I wanted to purchase a nice piece of kit without having to deal with waiting lists etc for 2 months after launch. I dont regret it at all, though I had a slight worry about the reception which has been resolved now.

3GS owners are still in contract.

There could be a lot of 3G owners upgrading (though alot of us already upgraded in January to the 3GS when our contracts were done). The crowds are basically a result of some upgrading - but clearly due to the sheer numbers buying - also a lot of brand new customers joining the iPhone platform because the newest iPhone is also the best iPhone - and one of the most critically acclaimed phones of all time.

Do you really believe everything you say?

Which one of my statements is wrong?

The newest iPhone being the best ever (which it clearly is ).

Or the iPhone 4 being critically acclaimed (which it clearly is )

Well there's a first, something about the Jesus phone in the Grauniad that isn't a advertorial.

That's because it is from Charlie Brooker. I don't think he has ever been highly complementary of any of the iPhones.

He's not really complementary about anything much.

He did like that morning children's programme on Channel Five. I think he liked Bagpuss too.

Fair enough. Who doesn't like Bagpuss?

I can't stand The Grauniad or the idiots who write for it so I'm not even gonna read it. But if you look at all the good review sites such as anand the iPhone 4 gets a great write up and from personal experience it's a good phone and easily the best yet.

Isn't Brooker the same smug git that said Spartacus Blood and Sand was rubbish after watching just one episode?

I can see why people are queuing up, I was there on the first day, I was a 3G owner who's contract ran out earlier in the year and waited for the iPhone 4. But I am a gadget freak and few things in life get me excited like buying a new gadget, especially as married life is now making those purchases a very rare thing. Oh and the fact that I sold my 3G and promised to post it on the 25th,

Wow. The online forum equivalent of putting your fingers in your ears and going "LA LA LA I CAN'T HEAR YOU!"

It appears to be a common theme among fanboys that any organ or person that publishes something that isn't more than gushing, is attacked by said fanboys.

Not quite, I have read enough from that idiot that I don't value his opinion especially on smartphones so why bother reading it when expert reviews from anand and the likes are always very accurate and unbiased.

Why comment on something you can't even be bothered to read?

Because my comment is that the source is unreliable and I certainly wouldn't make my buying decision on it. Read proper reviews from experts and hands on from people who own the device.

Sorry, I didn't bother reading your last post - I've already read enough of your comments to know that it's not worth it.

Read the article and just what I expected, comments on antennae design when he has no idea what he is talking about. I have tested my phone in areas where I have never had a good signal and get dropped calls and the iPhone 4 works better even when I hold the bottom left, yes it may display 1 bar but what does that matter, as long as you don't drop a call. Also every phone I have owned has had the same issue when you hold it in a certain place so it's nothing new. Also if bridging the gap at the bottom left is what causes it than why when I cover it with electrical tape does it make zero difference on the signal display?

Well, it was a rather rubbish first episode.

However, he did admit that it got much better...

"But here's the surprise – after a disappointingly slow (yes, slow – despite the constant sex and violence) pair of opening episodes, Spartacus starts to improve exponentially until somewhere round episode five, where you stop enjoying it ironically and start to enjoy it outright. ... but it's also not half bad. In fact I'd go as far as to say it actually gets quite good. There's just a hell of a lot to desensitise yourself to first. Good luck. Give it a go."

------------------

I queued up on launch day for mine, outside the Apple Store.

Why? Because reserving one for collection at the Apple Store was the only way to guarantee getting one (save for ordering one for delivery and paying the full SIM Free price), & I knew that they would sell out & it would take time before Apple or O2 got more stock after the launch day. Plus I had sold my previous iPhone, & was having to make do with a crappy old Nokia 1100 which I wanted to ditch ASAP.

Because you were obviously in an area with a signal strength strong enough to not notice the high attenuation caused by bridging the gap, given the wide range used by the 5th bar of the display.

[I assume you have read the AnandTech review, given that you have referred to it in an earlier post in this thread?]

If you had been in an area where the signal strength was at the bottom end of the range for 5 bars, you would have seen a difference.

Where are these one bar signal areas anyway?
