Limit to when you can port your number?

Is there a limit on when you can port your number over to another sim?

Thinking about signing up with o2 for their broadband and phoneline as well as getting a SIM only contract. But my current contract with T-Mobile doesn't end till the end of this month.

Am I ok to sign up with o2 today, then port my current number in a months time to it?

Check with O2!

Number porting with O2

Best to make sure if you definitely can get a SIM now & port the number to it later, as I don't think all networks allow that (I would have thought the usual thing would be to only accept a port when the order is placed, or soon after).

When does you contract actually end? Have you already paid your final payment, & it actually *ends* at the end of this month?

You could request a PAC now from T-Mobile, & buy your way out of the final month if you do still have time left to pay. Or at least ask T-Mobile if you'd need to pay...

T-Mobile say I need to buy my way out and I refuse to pay if all I need to do is wait it out.

I will give o2 a call and see what they say.

. . . .”

No, as Daveoc64 says, there is no time limit O2 will let you port your number in at any stage.

(You may be thinking of Vodafone, who will only allow a port at the time of order)

I had a nightmare with o2 just a couple of weeks ago trying to port my number into them a month after I got a new contract.

It seems that the 'rule' from my research is that:

On a personal contract you can port in at any time you wish.
On a business contract you can't port in at any time, it has to be done within 14 days of the contract going live.

When I called the woman said "i've been here three years, it can't be done, you can't port your number in as it's after 14 days". You'd think they'd go out of their way to help business users and offer more to them than personal... but no.

However, I emailed their support team. After about 5 emails of much confusion, they did port my number over a month after the contract was live.

It's all as clear as mud, technically it's possible and it looks like on a personal contact it'll be fine.
