Hi,

I am buying myself a iPod Classic, but was wondering if there is an alternative to this.

The good points so far is a massive 160GB storage capacity.

Thanks

Not really any great alternatives, but I recommend eBay and just get an original iPod instead of the new rebranded 'classics'. My girlfriend got a used 80GB for £80.

i was looking for a similar thing, but i found that most alternatives are flash based, so smaller storage and higher cost. the only other options were archos type media players that were much bigger to have a 3.5" screen for watching videos, and an inflated price to boot

in the end i got a second hand, but brand new unused, ipod classic 120gb for £100 from a cash convertors type place. i already had an iphone so i had to get used to itunes and tag stuff, which is a pain

i use it in disc mode and added a bunch of portable apps such as winamp, as when i plug it into another pc i can run winamp and play the music from it on that computer, so ultimately it can do what most alternative players can do, but the downside is you have to use itunes to use it as an mp3 player. you can use alternatives like mediamonkey i suppose, but you can't just drag and drop files like on the archos

nothings for sure. the current model could be the last HD based player, but then you can now get 250gb 1.8" drives so it would be nice if they did a model with that inside

I'm buying my iPod from Tesco on Monday with a 10% discount and some vouchers which I had gives me £10 off a mp3 player and double clubcard points.

all in all, it will be around £150 ish if you count the clubcard voucher money...

Silver iPod 160GB....

Update - Well I didn't buy the iPod, after finding out that in order for me to delete a song, I need to connect it my laptop and then delete it via iTunes.

I was messing around with my friends Creative Zen X-Fi2 32GB, it was quite nice, small, compact, so I got that instead and I can delete any songs directly from the player.

Just got myself a 16GB Sony NWZ-A845 which puts the audio quality of the iPod to shame (I have an ipod as well so I've compared them both) so if you not too bothered about space but are about audio quality and 16GB is plenty of room then the A845 is a very nice player. Also the D&D feature is very handy and quick for transferring MP3 files.

Its easier to harmonize your music collection if you simply rate the songs while you are out. Deleting songs on a device isn't necessary.

it isn't necessary, but should be an option, especially for a device which is so popular with the "in crowd".

you spend hundreds on a iPhone/iTouch and yet you can delete a song.

sometimes you just want to delete a song without firing up the ol PC/Laptop, etc,,etc...

each to their own

I still like the iTouch, its a nice look device

Depends how you manage your music. Once you go about deleting songs all over the place on your device, you have to go home and do what? Match your collection to your device? Or just hope you never lose that device, or back up its library separately, in the long run you are just causing trouble for yourself, if you want to manage your collection, its better to simply rate songs, then you can do what you wish to them, whether never sync them, or simply delete them from your library all together.

oh my god, so because a device has a delete option, will that cause panic in the markets!!!!!!!!!!

stop getting so defensive, its only a music player.

I still maintain that it should have the option. (but it doesn't and no its not the end of the world)

It has nothing to do with panic, its about thinking about how something works as a matter of logic. Pruning your music collection by deleting it on device sounds convenient at first glance, but once you think about the implications, it really is of no benifit and is probably a total waste of time.

I'd look at the Archos a far better bits of kit.
