Going back to about 1987, I used to buy both Beano and Dandy religiously. I even forked out for the comic libraries they used to do (a couple every month if I remember).

The only let-down was when the comics changed their 'material'; - it went from like jotter paper to something like tracing paper.

That was when I gave up (yes, a massive, physical change in format can put off a 13 year old)

Anyone else decided to dump the comics because of that change ?

i got both every week!!
from that same period!!
i still have the annuels locked away somewhere as well.
my favourite was the Beano. and y favourtie character was Calamity James...the drawing style was quite surreal. he didnt last that long after then though, maybe around 2-3 years.

Lord Snooty, Billy The Whizz, The Bash Street Kids - barely remember much of the Dandy, about from Desperate Dan and Banarna Man.

i dont quite recall the change you refer to. i do remember the comics having thin paper on the outside - to the outside pages becoming thicker, glossier type paper.

i stopped around 1990-1991 - 1992ish (cant really when i stopped)

enjoyed those years reading them though

i see Dennis The Menace has a new tv show cartoon - but i read somewhere thry are not aloud to call him "menace",
I used to love his pet pig, Rasher. And Gnipper - the other smaller dog!!!
happy memories

Relative to newspapers, it's a shocking increase

There were constant 5p increases.

When I bought it 10 years ago it was going up by about 5p every 6 months. It was 45p when I started

It's now about £1.50 I think.

It's not a glossy magazine (or at least i wasn't?) it's only like normal newspaper style material - but not as long as a paper.. and The Sun has been 20p for as long as I can remember.

Albeit on small terms - but it has increased in price by 200%

Used to be 2000AD, The Eagle and Commando Comics for me.

Ys I had both. Also 'Bunty'. (1960s/70s) Later, 'Jackie'.

When I was reading Bean and Dandy my brother had those macho ones about WW2 pilots beating the Hun.

I rarely bought the comics but did buy the annuals.

I had a box load of boys comic/annuals. Infact i'm using one as a mouse mat at the moment.

My nan bought me the Eagle every week, and my mum banned 2000AD. Too disturbing for my fragile mind or something; fortunately my cousin's mind was deemed less corruptible so I read all of his.

I used to buy the Beano, Dandy, Topper and Beezer religiously every week from about the same period the original OP mentions. I also remmebr the change in paper and it also put me off lol. It went from thicker jotty paper to a shiny thinner sort of paper. I still have a few of the comics up in the loft somewhere. Most of my huge collection which spanned 4-5years and which also benefitted from charity shop finds and the likes, were handed over to my younger cousin who in turn passed them on to another younger cousin and so on for a number of years until one younger cousin just dumped them!!

I also bought the smaller sized monthly Comic libraries, although if I recall only the Beano and Dandy published these. Also looked fwd to the holiday specials - Easter, Summer etc, and of course the annuals which although they went on sale earlier each year, were always reserved as a Christmas stocking filler gift.

What days! Used to love coming home from the newsagents with all my comics and just lie on bed reading them for hours. I would also draw my own strips featuring my fave characters lol.

Ooooooo memories!!

Big big fan of UK comics back in the 60s and 70s.

Bought most of what has been mentioned above but my favourites were Cor!, Shiver and Shake, Whizzer and Chips and Roy of the Rovers. Anyone used to collect the summer and winter specials of the main comics? Great days.

I was also into UK Marvel where Planet of the Apes, Avengers, The Superheroes and Dracula Lives where my faves.

Its funny, I wasn't really into the Dandy or Beano back then but for the past 10 years or so I regularly buy the "special" editions such as Xmas, New Year and the Guy Fawkes issues along with the annuals. I find it very sad that kids of today don't have the variety of comic we had back then. Nothing used to beat running down to my local newsagents to get the latest issues. I had to huge piles of them next to my bed and I used to spend hours just lazing around reading them.

Its always fun to pop into charity shops or car boots to see if there are any pre-1980 comics for sale. A couple of months ago I was thrilled to find half a dozen Beezer and Topper broadsheet comics from the 1960s. Got them for 50p each!!

Made my weekend.

I used to get the Beano from '93-'08 but when they started to make it PC, take the revised Dennis that did it for me. I still get the annuals that's about it. you can't beat the 1970's-1980's annuals, they are packed with good stories.

Yep I used to buy them. I started when I was about 9 and read them til I was 15 I preferred the Beano to the Dandy though. Still have a lot of Beano comics and annuals lying around somewhere and a couple of Dandy ones as well.

The Amazing Mr X, from The Dandy in 1944 was the first British superhero.

spaintv, although the comic libraries were only for Beano, Dandy, and some of the girls titles (those were shortlived), Beezer and Topper characters would appear in Dandy Comic Libraries, and The Dandy's Bananaman even appeared in a few Beano ones when he was in Nutty comic.

Back in the sixties when they cost 3 (old) pence and the Summer specials made the summer so much better.

You got a few wrong. It's Pansy Potter, not Patsy. The Numskulls was misspelt and Danny's Tranny wasn't "and his". Black Bob's full title was Black Bob, the Dandy Wonder Dog. I've never heard of Faye Fearless, what comic was she in?
