Best way to name an mp3???
What is the best way to name an mp3?
I use the internet database to get the album and track info. Then I name the tracks as:_ Track No, Artist, Album, Track Name With the files in an Artist directory, sub directory Album. Do I really need the artist and album info? Will long names confuse mp3 players. |

Personally i use artistname-trackname , on my DVD player for instance it only reads the file name so its usful for those instances, ditto when its possibly multiple tracks have the same name - one of my NOW albums has the same track title by two artists
![]() Also makes searching in Explorer easier too

I use:
Artist\Album\## Title.mp3 (that way I can get the track names in order when browsing the folder) In my assorted download folders (organised by month downloaded) I just use Artist - Title.mp3 |

don't forget some players will use the ID tags rather than the file name.
Either way MusicMatch offers some good tools to batch rename (and tag) files based on user definable critera. Think you need full version for best effect - no doubt there are other equally capable tools for teh job |

Thanks for the advice folks.
At the mo, ive got just one artist, with about 10 out of 30 cds ripped. (I own the cds )Trouble is altho i get the tracks sorted by album and then by track order on the album. I get the albums ordered alphabetically, rather than chronologically(sp?) It's not too bad on a computer as you can arrange them using the software but i worry that i will be out of sync on a mp3 player. |

I do mine by seperate folders for the artist and sub folders for the album and then track number (eg. 01 song.mp3) with song title.

I name the tracks (use CDDB to get the names if I can) by "Track number - Artist - Tital"
For example: "01 - Phil Collins - You Can't Hurry Love". This way it organises the albums in track order. I also put ID3 tags and use the extra ones in Music Match to find the songs more easily. This way it includes, track number, track tital, artist, album tital, preference, year, situation, tempo and mood. |

The main problem Ive got now is:- I use Foobar2000 to play my files, I had 200 files, randomised, but when I play them, the hard drive has to catch up after 3 or 4 songs and I get skipping for about 30secs. How do I get it to play with out needing to buffer every now and then? |

That should say: "This way it organises the tracks in the order they appear on the album." I seperate my albums into folders of course and simply name the folder as the album tital. I'm not familiar with the software you're using but it could be that you need more memory in your computer or try another piece of software. I use musicmatch jukebox and have no trouble playing from the hard drive, but playing mp3 CDs can cause some problems. You could try and defragment your hard drive, as that can be a cause. I've had trouble getting mp3 players and DVD players to play them. They play some albums but not others. It may be to do with the album art I include in the ID3 tags or long file names. Quite often the track lists in these are listed by filename, but when you play the mp3 file, it shows the ID3 tags on screen. |

This is how I name my tracks...
For albums... Track Number - Artist Name - Album Name - Track Name - CDDB ID For compilations, I usually edit them so they appear like the above otherwise it will the artist will appear as 'various artists'. |

Just an UPDATE incase you or anyone else is interested. I've downloaded winamp2.91 and am now using that to play ALL the songs. Because it loads one song at a time, it runs alot better with no juttering when playing due to harddrive access. I'm using the format Track Number - Artist Name - Album Name - Track Name - CDDB ID for each file, so no trouble there, altho I would like to sort the albums by chronological order at some time. Im gonna create 3 types of playlist, 1. Alphabetical album order 2. Chronological order 3, Randomised order. For differnt moods. Sometimes you wanna hear the songs chronologicaly and sometime in random for spice. Edit: just incase anyone is wondering why Ive posted in the Entertainment section rather than the computing section, its because I was mainly wondering how the file naming would affect any portable mp3 player, eg IPOD or Rio etc. Or any cd mp3 players. At the mo I have 270 files, at 1.06gig, recorded at 128kbs 44hz. Organised by artist (just the one), album (22), songs. |
