Lost my phone what way does claiming of insurance work?

I lost my iPhone 3G last night when out and about, I reported it lost to the network last night who barred it and am just back from reporting it to the Police station who gave me a crime reference number, I had it covered under house insurance with away from home coverage, so what way does the thing work now? My insurance company doesn't open to later on, I'm worried they won't pay out, and even if they do the 3G is no longer made

Reading through your policy documents may help but generally you just ring them up to claim. Too late now but it's worth double checking the cover provided for mobiles. My contents insurer only covers mobiles up to value of £200 as standard and to cover my and my other half's iPhones I had to add them as specified personal possessions to cover them at full value

If you are covered most insurers I think will replace with an equivalent model of equivalent specification (3GS probably then)

I've just gone through exactly the same thing on my wifes behalf as she lost her 3G. The insurance company asked for the police lost report, and two quotes for a replacement.

I'm assuming they'er just going to send a cheque now for the replacement (minus the excess on the policy).

Worked out quite well really, my wife is going to get my 3gs now and I'll get a 4 (when they fix it!)

when i lost my 3g they paid me the cost of an equivilant replacement as it was no longer available, that allowed me to go out and purchase a replacement handset. i put a little more to it and got the 3gs 32gb model. have been very careful to not let this one out of my sight tho, until the 3g i had never as much as damaged a phone, never mind lost one. took about a week to sort out and i dont fancy being without a phone for a week again, especially as i need it for work!

Wouldnt worry about them not paying out, they probably have hundreds of claims a day and know how to spot genuine ones from fraudulent ones. as you have followed the proceedures by logging it with your network and the police there shouldnt be a problem, just expect a short delay in them paying out.

when my phone got stolen i just called them up with the crime ref number and the IMEI number (available from your network) and they went ahead and sent me a cheque for the replacement amount. the phone i had wasn't available to buy anymore, so i was just paid the cash equivalent based on a suitable replacement. I had a number of other items to claim for as it was my bag that was actually stolen. the whole thing was very painless.
