Yeah with dire quality though that mate it unusable. I do however think videocalling will never take off.

Or it could have possibly been the ridiculous per-minute charges that the networks still insist on charging and almost never bundle in contracts.

Mobile broadband took off when it became cheaper.

Video calls have been charged by O2 at the same rate as voice calls for years (and they'll come out of any voice allowance you have as well), yet nobody uses it.

Only on contract. On PAYG it is still 50p/min.

Not that it matters, o2's 3G coverage is useless, so it isn't as though you'll have a signal to make a call anyway.

Is FaceTime on UK Networks free? It works over Wi-Fi doesn't it?. . . .Is it not a standard App like Skype? I don't get why this needs a phone connection as opposed to just working as two iPhone 4's connecting via Wi-Fi.

If you are referring to the discussion about call costs, that is when you use the video calling standard as implemented in UMTS and has been available in the UK and other countries for years.

Not to be confused with "FaceTime" which is Apple's way of claiming they invented the whole idea of video calling.

I haven't tried it but don't you have to initiate the call the first time via cellular then switch to FaceTime. I think I read somewhere that once both parties are registered on Apples servers they can make subsequent FaceTime calls on WiFi only.

I don't know what you're talking about.

My question was. . .when making an amazingly clear call via FactTime on the iPhone 4 - does it cost money from your network? Is it charged as a voice call?

I always presumed that you could have it just as an Application on the iPhone like Skype. If it streams over Wi-Fi then why is there a connection to the phone you're calling?

Surely the call is only initiated to alert the person your phoning that you're trying to phone them. . .but once they accept should it not be like opening an App and just using the internet as opposed to keeping an open connection via the network?

It doesn't cost anything, it hangs up as soon as it makes a connection so the first time you FaceTime someone it will be 1 min from your allowance. After that you can do it without calling first.

You don't even need to do that.

Just go open up one of your contacts and tap the "FaceTime" button.

So there's a setting on iPhone 4 something along the lines of "initiate FaceTime awareness when connected via wifi"?

Surely FaceTime always needs to be on the outlook for an incoming call. I understand Gormonds initial voice call then switching to wifi and cancelling the voice call. I'm just confused how you never need to do that again making all calls free.

I had a call from one of our on the road sales guys who was looking for a specific part for a demonstration, we used face time and I was able to show him exactly what I was looking at in detail and he was able to confirm what I was looking at was the right thing. He was even able to say "oh its the ones in the next bin you are looking for"

In the past I would have photograpejhd it and MMs'd it or emailed it over, it was done in seconds, I was quite impressed.

It has been around for years but I was amazed at the quality. A very good tool for my business when I am dealing with a lot of remote salesmen looking for things.

I hope this does take off for Apple. It can only be a good thing at the end of the day. I understand Apple are considering rolling this out in the future across networks - but why didn't they just allow this now? I have used video calling in the past and the video was very pixelated.

fring allows video calls over skype with certain handsets but not in the same quality as facetime, what apple have is like a mobile webcam, quite neat. i dont think it'll be long before an app arrives on android for mobile webcam.
