I've read things on these threads, talked to freinds family etc and read in papers about artists being either overatterd or underated.

I tell you what i mean, Paloma faith fans for example would love her to have the success that Lady GaGa is having however if Stone Cold Sober was as big as Just Dance, New York as big as Poker Face and To You Want The Truth Or Something Beautiful as big as The Fame people would be fans and other people be saying she is far overated when right now with the success these singles are bringing her make her underated.

The same goes for the reverse, Lady GaGa is mentioned as overated (Airplay etc), but what if Just Dance only peaked at 17, Poker Face 15 and The Fame peaked at 9 and sold 1.7 millions less than what she has sold in the UK (figures are palomas statistics.), there would be people going OMG she is so underated but due to her massive successs she is overated.

Mystery to me.

Pretty pointless thing to do...but I'll bite.

I don't think Lady Gaga was a good example because she's earned her success, it's not a fluke or off the back of a reality competition. Her songs were hits waiting to happen, I can't really envision songs like Poker Face or Just Dance under-performing with the amount of generic crap about the place.

Paloma is an acquired taste, which is why she hasn't set the charts alight. There's been a whole string of quirky brit-pop female singers this year, who are all in the spotlight but remain underrated when looking at sales.

Gaga's songs would not have got the attention they did get without her image. The image is the USP in this case, not the music, which is fairly generic.

 No it isn't. No-one had heard of Gaga when Just Dance was released and became an international hit and sold over 700k in the uk. Poker Face and Bad Romance in particular are 2 of the best pop songs of the last decade - and it's not just me saying that, or indeed just pop fans, serious critics have said so too.

But don't let me stop you - after all it's a typical Gaga-hater's thing to convince themselves that her songs are only selling because of what she wears. Yep, we're all idiots according to them.

Her image wasn't as bizarre back then. It was just heightened retro-cyber fashion.

Just Dance and Poker Face are stellar pop songs, they could have been hits with any half decent pop star singing them, it just so happened that the artist who WAS singing them made the songs more exciting and turned out to be an incredible act.

Her image certainly raises her profile and promotes her material, but people aren't going to buy music based on what the singer dresses like, they buy it because they like it. It's lazy to suggest otherwise.

Absolutely true. In a crowded market place you need something to make you stand out

I knew nothing about Gaga other than seeing her in the papers dressed in strange outfits.

But that made me check her out and the music hooked me in.

Now I hardly notice what she is wearing and I just concentrate on the music which may not be to everyones taste but it is mine

If that was her master plan it worked with me
