Yeah really grates on me too, tho' I have got a mate from middlesbrough who calls everyone 'my little rhinoceros' after a few beers lol so I'm guessing the chicken thing is common up north and he's just making a play on it.

Londoners (like Victor) annoy me much more with their use of "innit" and various other slang.

Slang is annoying because it substitutes real words for stupid ones. Terms of endearment such as "love" and "chicken" are not substitutes for other words — they just add affection to one's speech.

Having said that, I find the overuse of the word "baby" in pop music very annoying.

"love" is okay. But "chicken" sounds retarded and embarassing.

How are you doing, donkey?
What are you thinking, goat?

Seriously, don't use animal names when addressing people even if it's with good intentions. People haven't spoken out in the house because it would be akin to asking Kitten to stop using the words "like" or "whatever". Only a frontal lobotomy would achieve that goal.

A large number of people in the UK use animal names and most people don't find it annoying. Your problem, not theirs.
