Yea I think there is a possibility they'll offer free bumpers... or a free 'basic' bumper, maybe not the ones they're selling for £25, one without the metal buttons and only in one colour?

I doubt it would be a product recall, otherwise they would be announcing that imediately... and they are far too slow to announce that, they wouldn't have waited. I never thought there would be a recall anyway but some are thinking they should.

I certainly hope it's not about the signal "problem" affecting the minority as I really do think there will be some suicides if it is.

Some people on here who don't even own the phone will have no reason to actually exist anymore of the signal "problems" are fixed. I fear for them

I think you maybe a few signal bars short of an iPhone, getting all emotional and attached to an inanimate object. Please, step outside and breathe some fresh air.

I don't have an iPhone 4, I'm just genuinely fearful for those who will no longer be able to talk about reception problems they aren't even experiencing in a thread about a phone they don't even own.

We'll have to do our best to get them through, what will be, a very emotional and depressing time.

God knows how people are going to cope if they can no longer bash a product they don't own and have never laid eyes or hands on on the basis of a few youtube videos showing an issue that just doesn't happen if you hold the phone normally

Not just a few videos, people trying them in shops, one semi-scientific test and one fully scientific test in a chamber + expensive test equipment.

I'd like to know what you consider to be normal when it comes to handling the phone - as it appears that what you and Apple deem as abnormal is perfectly normal to everyone else.

Worry ye not, we shall cope. Just be sure you won't find yourself in an area with a weak signal, you may be surprised how inappropriately you are holding your phone.

Can I have £10 on the words "thin" or "thinnest" and "revolutionary" being used? They seem to be the Apple buzz word of the moment.

Something like "By making the thinnest ever iPhone some people have experienced some difficulties due to our revolutionary aerial design"

What is iPad? iPad is thin. Still makes me laugh every time I see the advert

Do you not see the irony in the highlighted comments above? You above almost anyone else keep banging on and on and on and on - about a phone you apparently don't even own..

Maybe those people that don't have the iPhone 4 would like one, thus expressing there concerns and opinions?

Didn't realise the 'concerns' about the phone were exclusive to iPhone 4 users, or maybe we shouldn't discuss it at all cos it only affects the minority.

You dont have an iPhone 4? You, the guy who practically orgasms at the very mention of it, dont even have one.

You the guy that berates everyone for talking about its issues dont even have one?

You, the guy who abuses people by saying they cant comment on it as they dot have one, dont even have one yourself?

Surely you must realise how ridiculous you have made yourself out to be?

This antenna issue, it's just a revolutionary way how to hang up

I consider normal holding of the phone to be holding it in a way that allows one handed operation of the device. Holding the phone in the death grip prevents your thumb from accessing all the screen

Did these scientific or not so scientific tests you refer to actually try out the phone when holding it in the death grip and see if data throughput was the same or if calls dropped or did they just collect a load of meaningless numbers that in themselves are about as informative as the signal bars themselves. You may be interested to know I did a speed test over 3G when I had full signal and again with one bar of signal in the death grip and guess what. The speed tests came out more or less the same

Worry ye not, we shall cope. Just be sure you won't find yourself in an area with a weak signal, you may be surprised how inappropriately you are holding your phone.
Did you not read my post. I said I don't get the signal loss issue because I hold my phone normally

It isn't a death grip issue. Holding a phone lightly in the left hand with the base of the phone in the palm and the fingers/thumb supporting it and curling lightly around it is the normal method for most right handed people I know. They use a couple of fingers of their right hand to select and input. That is how the tests were in most cases performed.

One handed operation is definitely a minority and unusual method - it isn't "normal" for most people.

This talk about what is normal or not. All it takes to fix the problem is to put some isolation over the antenna. One would say that for the price they are charging for it they would do that rather than tell people how to hold the bloody phone. BTW it takes a genius to expose the antena like that just because it looks pretty, sod the functionality. You can experience similar with lets say FM radio with telescopic antennas, touching it may improve the reception or make it worse. This is not anything new, an antenna is not to be touched, it changes reception.

For me, the issue on Friday is going to be how Apple choose to spin it. "It" being whether (and how) they acknowledge that the iphone4 has a fundamental design flaw.

As a minimum, they must do that - if they don't then all the goodwill and credibility that they've built up for years will dissipate and from here on the media will, rightly, view them with a great deal of suspicion.

Honesty WILL be the best policy - any other approach will ensure this story runs and runs until it hangs like a millstone round their necks. The problem is that in this instance honesty will require some explaining (how did the fault survive testing?, why did we tell people the fault lay with the software?, why are we still selling the iphone 4? why are we removing references to the problem from our sites?) as well as a considerable dose of humble pie.

Being the Marketing-driven company that they are, you just know that their goal will be to turn a negative into a positive.

Going to be fascinating to follow.....

I don't have the phone and so I don't keep going on about a problem such as having dropped calls.

I don't see any irony

People without the phone saying "omg dropped calls. Poor signal attenuation" for the past two weeks at least 200 times a day - those are the ones I'm talking about. I do genuinely worry for them when the issue goes away

You're a bit confident aren't you?

Apple could do anything tomorrow, including:

- denying everything outright, giving people a technical lecture on why they think nothing is wrong
- announce a software fix that will solve the issue properly (not likely given that iOS 4.1 beta release)
- announce that they're giving bumpers to everyone for free (not an actual fix)
- announce a replacement programme for people who have a problem with their phone

I would say the chance of a meaningful fix is still pretty slim.
