All sounds very Americanised- ughh!
I don't have very high hopes for this.

I've read various comments on the original source - some say its reliable and others say it talks rubbish so who knows.

Why? Because the new characters are American? Given that the series is partly set in America, it would be odd if they weren't.

I have no issues with some of the new cast being american, as Ting said this is being based in America so it would make sense to include American cast.

Also if the rumours are true then Rhys and PC Andy will also be included as well so it would still tie in with the Torchwood we love(or hate)

In fairness though, I remember a lot of people not having high hopes when they heard S3 was going to be over 5 consecutive nights and that was one of the best pieces of TV of the year.

Will wait for this before judging. Looking forward to it no matter what to be honest.

TW could be resilient to some Americanisation. Inevitable given the circumstances of production. But if you really don't like the thought you might have to satisfy yourself with DW for your "British through and through" SciFi. (or is that Scottish through and through nowadays?) The producers want to break America, and there's no shame in wanting that (Dennis Spooner jacked in DW in the hope of that, I think.)

I was going to say the lead has always been American, but wiki tells me he's Scottish (of course.)

If you're lucky it will be "good american" as in The Wire or Frasier or The Simpsons or X-Files etc. etc.

Looks interesting. The convicted murderer and paedophile makes it seem like the show will be going in an even darker direction this year than last.

CIA? Maybe they'll team up with Stan Smith.

I can dream, can't i?

They sound like the blandest and most obvious characters you're ever likely to get.

I can imagine Torchwood trying to snatch Roger the Alien.
Hilarity would ensue.

One of the new characters is
Quote:
“Oswald Jones, a convicted murderer and paedophile,”

How are they going to handle such a controversial theme?

They never said his role.

He could be a vilain, or he was set up.

Not so controversial - Blake's 7 managed to get the main hero convicted of child abuse in the first episode...

To be fair we dont have much description to go on and it will also be in the casting and portrayal that these characters will sink or soar.

I'll try to keep an open mind but IMHO, Doctor Who in America was cr^p (shame as Paul McGann was great) so I don't hold out much hope for Torchwood. OK it was over 20 years ago but even so.....

I will watch it anyway and I hope I'm pleasantly surprised.

I wonder if he's only recurring because he is locked up, but has a "gift" that the team need on numerous occassions to help with cases. It happens a lot in TV and Movies (and I'm assuming real life) Like CSI or Silence of the Lambs. But in TW it will no doubt have a sci-fi twist.

Esther, the non-white TW character, supposed to be in unrequited love with the
white guy Rex? What is it with RTD and this theme (Martha and Tenth Doc, Tosh and
Owen) ?

Or, it could be that he has been convicted for something he didn't do - he's been listed as a 'convicted' peadophile. Perhaps he has some connection (be it governmaental or supernatural) to whatever will be going on, and to discredit his reputation, the powers that be had him incarcerated for a heinous crime he didn't actually commit?

That's one of the alarm bells for me. I honestly think the whole thing's a fake, cooked up by a group of livejournal'ers as a "social experiment" to see how many people will fall for it and report it in media outlets (like DS!). Aside from the "unrequited love between different races" bit, I was suspicious when I read the name Rex Matheson. Matheson was the name of GDL's character in Girl Number Nine. Rex is the titular character from DT's Rex is not Your Lawyer. Reusing Jones yet again? And for a pedophile, no less! Way to get a rise out of the Ianto fans who still aren't over his death (and sending tweets and emails to Starz and the Beeb on a daily basis.)

Any attempts to find out where the casting call originated have amounted to nothing. When a casting website was named, there was no link to the call and supposed screenshots if it only served to cause more suspicion. Any casting call I came across listed a union like SAG or AFTRA or said "non union". The supposed Torchwood call had UNION on it, but didn't specify.

Now maybe I've given this way too much though and should be doing something more productive, but I don't like people being taken for fools so a handful of people can go "we made it all up to make you look stupid, you stupid fans".

And if it is real... Rex Matheson is a really stupid name!

Are these posts coming direct from the 1930s? What's so outlandish about "mixed-race romance"?

Do you know, I felt ignorant just typing those words.

The information came from Michael Ausiello, a journalist with a lot of contacts in the entertainment industry. He's broken a lot of stories in his time but is, clearly, no match for your investigative abilities.

I love a well-reasoned argument.

I like your theory....but Barrowman must have been duped as well as he has tweeted about the show and also Eve Myles has given an interview so I presume the show is going ahead but I see where you are coming from with the specific character details.

The show is going ahead, that's not what I'm disputing, or suspicious about. It's the unsubstantiated casting call sheet that's doing the rounds.

Nothing. I'm all for them and long may they be a fact of everyday life. What I'm not too happy with is yet another unrequited love storyline where RTD is credited with creating a scenario whereby a woman of colour is in love with a white man who isn't in love with her. It's been done. Why rehash a crap plot device again in the same show so soon after Owen and Tosh?

And Ausiello probably got it from ONTD. It was being discussed and disputed in several LJs for days before it appeared, again with no links to substantiate it, on Ausiello's blog.
