Spoiler

If this turns out not to be true, don't have a go at me. I heard this from the woman on This Morning's SoapBox. I don't understand this. Corrie can live without a gay character for over 40 years and suddenly the soap can't be without one.

I loved Sean in the canal street episodes!

And I think it's great if he works at the factory, that will be funny.

I really hope this is not true. He could perhaps be the only thing in the world that would make me stop watching Corrie. A screaming Queen like him is exactly what Corrie doesn't need. Like Cora said, they've gone 40 odd years without a gay character, I don't see why they need one now. In my opinion he will not be a popular character, I really can't see him fitting into the fabric of the Street.

In the 90s Corrie got criticised for not showing enough ethnic minorities, and someone had this to say in Corrie's defence... "The producers aren't working from a checklist of ethnic types, sexualities and issues which have to be shoehorned into the plot to keep the soap socially credible" There isn't a gay person in every single Street in Britain is there? So if this rumour is true I think there is no need at all for Corrie to bring another gay character in so soon after it has just finished a gay storyline - especially such an unlikeable one as that Sean. He is nothing but a charicature of a gay person, at least you could see Todd as a person and some people may have been able to empathise with him. But from what i've seen of this Sean he just ticks the 'Gay Man' box on the checklist.

Oh no.. I thought he was seriously annoying. Not much of an actor either. It was like they were basing him on Jack from Will & Grace. I really hope it's not true..

That actor plays the same role in everything he does - I've seen him in at least four other roles. Why does Corrie feel the need to 'replace Todd'?

I hardly think every story line will revolve around him!

He'll just be someone working at Underworld, who'll probably be in the comedy sketches, and this will most probably involve the other factory girls, it would be funny. If it's true, i think its a good move.

Exactly what I thought ...and if they did feel the need to involve him in more serious storylines, they can make hime a little less camp and a bit more emotional.

He should remain a bit camp. Some people are like that and are usually good company.

Apparently the original plan was to have a new long-term boyfriend for Todd. Then, when Bruno Langley unexpectedly quit, they decided to bring in Seán instead. The actor who plays him (can't remember his name) was previously in Queer As Folk

I agree, I think he'll work really well along with the factory girls. (And as the soap woman on This Morning said it, it probably actually is true )

Knowing Corrie they won't overdo it, they'll break him in gently as it were. I think it could be a really good idea. As for him being a camp stereotype ... there are gay men like that, Marco being a case in point

Did you see it too? She also said that the Ferreiras are still filming on EE which means that rumours about them leaving may not be true or else they just haven't left yet. Mickey and Ronny were on T4's Pop Beach yesterday (a thread which I am quite embarassed about ) and Ronny said he was just back from a couple of weeks off. So,.......?

This coming from the woman on TM that said that Karl in Corrie was to stay, that Karl was to turn psycho.

I'll believe nothing she says. She probably just read the NOTW yesterday and is taking it as gospel. (And we all know just how right the NOTW is)

I don't watch This Morning any more so to be honest I don't even know who this soap woman is. Silly me, I assumed she was like Tina Baker who does the Lorraine Kelly prog, and usually seems to have her finger on the pulse of future storylining.

Anyway, I hope it's true, although from what you say above it's looking increasingly unlikely!

Tssk, you can't even believe what they say on the telly now

OK - thanks to me for trawling the internet!!

The actor's name is Anthony Cotton, he played Alexander Perry in Queer as Folk, and Stephen in Burn It. His Corrie character is called Sean Tully.

I don't know that this would be a good move - it would revoke all the goodwill they earned from the sensitive and brutally honest way they developed Todd and his storyline.

In the context he's already appeared he was OK, showing indeed a gay man who fitted the camp (ie non sexual, non-threatening and hugely "entertaining") gay stereotype was part of the mix. But as a standalone representative it would be like a soap hiring Victor from BB as it's first black character.

If they bring him in with a non-camp boyfriend I might be persuaded, but I suspect he will not be allowed to have a serious sex-life.

Why such the big deal about a gay character? It is common nowadays that gay people actually live normal lives. The reason Corrie are more than likely bringing him in is that they are moving with the times. I remember the uproar when there was going to be the first gay kiss in Corrie and how some viewers would be offended by it. Didn't exactly make the ratings go down did it?!? I think people should stop concentrating on the fact the character is gay and more on the fact a new character is entering. And like someone said earlier, I don't think he would come in on a major storyline to do with his sexuality?

By the way, what was Karl's thug boyfriend called?

Can't recall his name right away but I'd actually prefer him to join and "soften up". He was sexier than Karl anyhow

It isn't that he's gay that I personally am concerned about, but how he will come across. Todd and Karl have been amazing representations of homosexuals, proof indeed that not all gays are screaming queens. We've had camp on telly for decades and it does nothing to combat homophobia, in fact it may even reinforce it. Thats why the Corrie storyline was so refreshing, if a little sensational.

The worry is that Antony Cotton will come in and all that work done by Chris Finch and Bruno Langley might be forgotten in the straight man's mindset??
