All homes who participate in UK ratings measurement have a box wired up to every tv in their home (and each person in the home has an individual remote so they can measure how many people are watching a show within the household), so that doesn't affect measurements.

It still doesn't account for those that are recording or those that watch in the company of others, either in their own home or in someone elses.

It does account for timeshifts, the figures released initially are the overnights (excluding timeshifts), whilst the timeshift data is gathered over the following 7 days to produce the final figures 8 days later:

Quote:
“PVR, DVDR and VCR playback and catch-up VOD viewing via TV set-top boxes is reported if it takes place within 7 days of the original broadcast. This viewing (known as timeshift viewing) is then added to the live data to produce the final, minute-by-minute consolidated audience, available 8 days after the original transmission date. Consolidated data is the ‘BARB Gold Standard’ that is used by the industry to report and trade on.”

http://www.barb.co.uk/about/tvMeasurement?_s=4
.

Quote:
“When a household agrees to join the panel their home has all their television sets, PVRs, DVDRs, VCRs etc. electronically monitored by a meter. Each piece of equipment that is connected to each TV set in the home is also connected to the BARB meter, which electronically monitors the equipment and determines which one is feeding the TV screen at any point and what it is doing. Over 30,000 devices, including equipment that is identified but not measured by BARB (games consoles, for example) are connected into BARB meters. Each TV in a home is connected to its own meter which holds an electronic record for the set. The meter is a small box which is put close to each television set and connected to it. The meter automatically identifies the channel that the panel member is viewing.”

http://www.barb.co.uk/about/tvMeasurement?_s=4

also, from that same link:

Quote:
“All panel household residents and their guests register their presence when in a room with a television set on (the BARB definition of television viewing). Each individual panel member does this by pressing the button allocated to them on each meter handset. An LED screen on the front of the meter reminds panel members periodically to register their presence if they have not already done so. Whenever a panel member leaves a room they de-register their presence. The metering system monitors all registrations made by each individual for each television in the home.”

As for SCD benefiting from ant XF problems, I am sure that the producers will find a way of screwing things up yet again so that any possible advantage is lost.

There is also another paragraph that could upset the viewing figures.

The channel viewed the longest in a clock minute is attributed the viewing of that minute. Viewing at anything other than normal speed (fast forwarding/rewinding live or recorded content) is not reported. The data is available for reporting nationally and at ITV and BBC regional level.

Could be that the people that watch are that busy fast forwarding through Brucie's, Alesha's and the judges bits that the figures are not accurate.

How many times do you read on this and other boards " I fast forward through (enter own name) bits."

Good point, but bear in mind the ratio of the likely bad bits to the dance bits, and any such discrepancies might only show up in the detailed breakdowns (exhibited as variations over each 5 or 10 minute block) whilst the average figure over the whole show is only slightly down (as is likely to be the case with an average, especially as various people will be likely to FF at different times over different things), and the peak is unaffected.

Thanks for the info mossy, I guess that sometime in the future there will be a more accurate way of counting viewers.

To be honest I don't think either X Factor or SCD will worry too much about it, the only time they will worry is if they drop a few million viewers. If you look at the offerings on saturday night tv over the rest of the year they are well behind these 2 programmes in terms of viewers.

You all still sure the Xfactor is gonna have another great year??

I just feel that the format is getting tired. (prob wishful thinking on my part as I loathe it so much!!)

I think that SCD will have a better year this year, as they have initiated a (v controversial) shake up of the show. I'd have been happier with some changes in presenters/judges too but I reckon thats due next year...”

I also think SCD will have a better year, but it all depends on the calibre of celebrities taking part because SCD needs the tabloids to get back on it's side again. If Anne Widdecombe does take part, we're gonna get TV gold.

However, part of me thinks that XF is just going to completely take over every form of media again, I mean, it's only been back for a few days and I'm already getting utterly bored of having XF rammed down my throat.

Roll on the SCD preview show in a few weeks.

I think it depends on the line up of SCD this year.

It was a smart move to have a introduction show where they will reveal everythingI have to say.

In my paper today there were a few X factor fans complaining about the constant bickering between the judges...

Maybe they should switch to Strictly and see how real adults behave...or maybe not
