Freesat box install problem....

Just put up a new satellite dish then connected up my Grundig gufsdtr500hd recorder. When going through the first install setup program the signal strength is showing as 87%.Then the next stage of the install is searching for the transport id and the network id,it cant find them?It then proceeds to tell me dish is misaligned, this, after telling me i have good signal strength??

Signal strength and quality are not the same. Most likely you have locked onto the wrong group of satellites

robbocop33, if that is the problem, then it could be confirmed by taking a compass on your dish arm & compare it with another dish. Just do it from across the road & avoid metal railings, lamp-posts that deflect the compass.
The likeliest other bunch of satellites would be 10 East of where you should be.

My dish is sitting at exactly the same angle as the guy's upstairs.I did line it up with a compass to the astra satelite 28.3 degrees east of south.I turned the dish really slowly inch by inch and didnt find any other satellites?Does the fact the box was showing a signal at least mean the dish is fine and my connections are good?

Is the dish the same as the guy's upstairs? DIsh offsets are frequently different. Check everything [especially the LNB Skew] at http://www.dishpointer.com/

If you turned the dish inch by inch and did not find more than one group of satellites then something is certainly wrong.

Is it possible that the dish went slightly out of vertical alignment as you turned it?

What are you using to detect the signal? If you are using the meter in the receiver Is It possible that it's display is lagging and you turned through the group you want before it registered?

I installed my own dish for my GUFSDTR500HD too. After assembling the dish, I preset the quad LNB skew to position 3, as recommended in many internet posts. I mounted the dish initially pointing well to the East and with all four cables attached and secured to arm. I then moved it about an inch at a time (as already suggested above) towards the West. MrsA was hanging out of the downstairs window shouting nothing, better, worse etc. Once I'd got the best East/West alignment, I made sure the dish/arm was truly horizontal via the in-built spirit level on the arm. Then I tried adjusting the up/down alignment and picked the strongest signal position. I never thought to try moving the LNB skew.

I think that at the time of installation I had something like 85% to 90% strength and 80% to 90% quality as I remember being a bit disappointed it wasn't all 100%. When we continued from the initial screen, the box then automatically went into a software download mode. Now this seemed to make no progress for ages. Overall took about 15 to 20 minutes, so be patient. After that I think it rebooted and we then had a signal strength of 91% and quality of 100% and everything worked fine.

Hope that helps!

I had the missus screaming out the window as well, knew she'd come in handy for something! The second stage in the setup when its looking for the network id,is that the part you said takes ages?It times out with me and just press the blue button to search,or ok to continue. The only thing i cant seem to get near is the sensor elevation figure, its supposed to be 20. something but i cant physically get the dish down that far,im out of adjustment.I take it this measurement is just up from what is horizontal?

What kind of dish do you have? Mine's one of the 45cm tall oval mesh Sky type dishes. It is mounted pretty much vertical - all the elevation comes from the shape of the dish/position of the arm. Any chance your arm is out of alignment?

Most dishes are offset dishes - the angle when horizontal is actally say about 20 degrees different (depends on the make) - always use the scale on the dish brackets - if it has one. [The offset I think is created by the angle the LNB arm]

The satellites are 22000mls above the equator at longitude 28.2deg East. The compass bearing to locate is not 28.2deg. It changes depending on how far North and West of the satellite you are.

Enter your postcde in www.dishpointer.comand choose 28.2E to get correct azimuth, elevation and skew for your location. A minute error will miss the satellite by miles

Just wondered if robbocop33 ever got the problem sorted?

I'm still waiting for MrsA to finish watching her stacked up Coronation Steets so I can take our box back to Costco for an exchange. I was hoping that I'd get some feedback from another GUFSDTR500HD user....!
