Has anyone heard of the newest and latest smartphone coming from HTC called the HTC Ace?

If the phone is real then in some quarters it's going by the name of the HTC Desire HD, a European Evo?

HTC Desire HD (Ace) Features and Spec:

* 4.3 inch WVGA AMOLED Touch Screen
* 8 MP Camera (presumably the same one from Incredible and Evo)
* Dual-core Snapdragon 1GHz
* Android 2.2 OS
* HD 720p Video Capture
* Xvid Video Playback
* SRS Surround Sound
* Automatic Face Tracking
* Adobe Flash 10 Support
* 4GB Internal Memory (up to 32GB)
* E-book Reader Feature
* Uni-Body Aluminium Design

Not confirmed but just rumours at present. What do folk think, better than the current HTC Desire?

The only "new" feature i would think would set it apart would be the e-book reader built in.

but that said, there's not a lot there that you can't really do on the desire already.

The 4 gig memory would sure as hell come in handy for those of us still on 2.1.

Looks impressive enough but I don't think there's enough there to warrant dumping the Desire and forking out again. The only big difference seems to be the camera and if they just stuffed 8mp onto the same sensor as the Desire it could end up looking worse. I don't see the need for the 4GB memory if 2.2 is going to have apps on the SD card and the Desire should be able to do 720p with 2.2 as well.

I wish HTC would spend a little more time supporting the phones they've already released and little less on bringing out new models every five minutes.

I think other features included is:

Android 3.0 (Gingerbread)
8mp camera with flash (does Desire have a flash?)
Qualcomm dual-core Snapdragon processor 1.3GHz (if true, will make it the fastest phone on the market)

Yeah the Desire has a flash. I hope they do more with the camera than just up the megapixels, if not then I really can't see the point, there's a chance the pictures will be worse rather than better. 1.3Ghz would be useful but they would have to supply a far better battery than the one in the Desire or people will have to carry around spares.

Do you think Desire is the best smartphone around right now when you compare it to Samsung Galaxy S, Samsung Wave and of course iPhone 4?

Haven't tried the Samsung phones, I've not had a lot of luck with Samsung in the past so I avoid them rather than tempt fate. I quite liked the 3GS, I didn't buy one though because of the price and Apples closed system, I wouldn't go anywhere near the iPhone4 while it still has "Issues". The Desire does everything I want it to and it does it fast, I'm very happy with it.

Bit confused by the builtin in eBook reader comments. My Desire came with a builtin PDF reader that I could use to read pdf ebooks and if I wanted to look at other formats, well, there is an app for that.

I was playing with the Samsung in a shop yesterday and one of the things that I couldn't help but think is how it feels like and looks like an iPhone 3G, physically not software-ly

thats what i cant understand, why have a sd card slot if you cant use it to store your apps on as well, i have a hero, and it dont take many apps to fill it

Quite a poor upgrade for anyone with a Desire imo, I assume it's called HD because it does 720p video capture because WVGA is only SD. I do like the idea of a uni-body enclosure though but I hate having to use SD cards as they are really slow write/read in comparison to built in flash storage, they should just put 32GB of built in storage and do away with the SD card slot imo. I also hope they stop the race for faster processors and work more on battery life as the current generation of phones are as fast as you need imo.

Given that it the Desire has only been a few months old, most people who have one will probably be tied to a contract anyway. I don't think I'll be changing my phone for at least a year, depending on how HTC support an upgrade to Android 3 and/or how the cooked ROMs turn out.

You can get class 6 SD cards, so 6MB/s. Is the iPhone's flash faster? Not everyone wants or needs 32GB either, so at least SD cards keep the cost of the phone down and let you choose what you want.

I can agree with the CPU thing. My Desire flies (with a 2.2 cooked ROM).

I guess it must also be reiterated that it is all a rumour.

Sounds nice, but not enough different to warrant an upgrade from the desire, and tbh I'm not sure about the unibody design as that sounds like it'll have a sealed battery - not a good move in a smartphone imo as they drain so quick and carrying a spare is handy.

It's probably tempting for people looking to upgrade from a much older Android phone e.g. G1 or other platforms rather than targeted at existing Desire users.

I'm due to upgrade in 3 weeks and I'm still planning on getting the desire. Desire size is just right, I wouldn't want anything bigger.

YvEbook? It's one thing surfing the net for a bit of texting, but a whole book on a 4.3 inch (why not mm?) screen sounds ridiculous. How long would the battery last? 200/400/600 pages. And what is this obsession with camera mega pixels?

That is most people's first thought, but the HTC HD2 (a 4.3" phone) is very nice to hold and look at physically.
Part of that is probably because it has a lot less bezel than the Desire.

Looks good to me. The Desire is excellent and arguably currently the most impressive phone on the market, so an upgrade on the spec would surely be a further step in that direction. However as others have said, is it worth the upgrade so soon?

I bought a Desire sim free and my upgrade is due in November, so possibly worth the upgrade for me, I'll see what the final version brings.

My wife saw my Desire and it's the first smart phone (or geek phone as she calls them) that she actually wants herself, so if I upgrade she can have my handset, but this new model would have to be something special to make me part with the Desire.

As for those who don't own a Desire yet it would be a good option. An upgrade for other handsets such as the iPhone 4 or other smart phones with HTC looking more attractive an option with each new model they bring out it seems.

i read that the Desire can only handle 15fps for video. the new one is 720p i guess at 30fps, or will the Desire handle the same on 2.1 or 2.2?

Not sure where the 'Dual Core' bit came from.

If actually true it would be very big news.
It has not even arrived in the tablets yet!

Not a huge upgrade is it? All it will really do is to make your desires worth £25 second hand when it comes out. And of course provide HTC an excuse for yet more lag getting the latest version of android on the older phones. My 2 year old iPhone 3G is just about to be sold for £130. Kind of offsets the slightly more expensive iPhone 4 by...well, quite a lot. Surely HTC should be trying to bring their handsets into some kind of feature parity, or are they really going to be like the PCs of the 1990s?

The Desire's 2.2 upgrade, due before Christmas 2010, gives the 720p resolution to the Desire.

Not at the moment, however it's a leak and the final spec could be quite different. Having said that, the Desire is one of the best phones on the market currently, they may just be improving on that for new customers.

Not a chance, the Desire is an extremely popular phone the value won't plummet like that.

2.2 is coming to the Desire before Christmas 2010, straight from the mouth of HTC themselves, so this shouldn't affect it.

No reason why the Desire shouldn't do the same if you were to sell it in a few months for the next model of HTC. In fact I'd expect it to reach more than £130 being a newer and better handset.

I guess we'll just have to wait and see.
