Interesting article on the forthcoming Desire HD/Ace.

http://www.electricpig.co.uk/2010/08...e-does-matter/

It has made me think about the screen. Will it be too big? Uncomfortable in my jean pocket? Etc.

Exactly, this is one of the things I was talking about. Some people will find this is too big and opt for the Desire instead. I don't think the Desire HD will instantly put the Desire down in one go, I think the two will appeal to slightly different people.

There's no doubt there's going to be an 'optimum' size for a smartphone, and my own personal opinion is that it's somewhere near the 4.3 inch.

Let's face it, making calls on a smartphone is not the 'phone's' prime task anymore, it's all of the other stuff you can do that makes people buy them, and on a touch screen most of those things can be accomplished on a slightly bigger screen than most phones currently have.

I've looked at the Galaxy S and it almost tempted me away from the Desire, but the 4.3 inch screen and the Sense UI have got me hanging on for the Desire HD.

A screen that size also starts to blur the territory between smartphone and tablet, I'm just itching to get one

It will be interesting to see if the Desire HD will become the new flagship (with any software development effort) going toward it, or will the Desire still be made/sold alongside it.

Hopefully the hardware differences are not great, it might convince HTC to release 2.5 or 3.0 (whatever it will be called) for both if it is easy to do.

People with a HTC Desire will find this upgrade pointless, if you've waited to upgrade to a smartphone then this could be a very good place to start. I think 4" is enough screenwise for a phone. Anything bigger and its a tablet. The Dell streak for example it not a phone in my eyes, its stupidly big. How someone can have that in their pocket i;ll never know.

But if you look at the supposed pictures of the Desire HD, the front of the phone is totally dominated by the screen, so the overall size of the phone itself isn't that great.

As for finding an upgrade from the Desire to the Desire HD you may well be right, but I suspect the bigger screen and the improved looks will be enough to tempt many

Yay....but still not enough to make upgrading from the current Desire worth it.

The optimum size for a phone for 2G is no doubt about 50 grams and about 3" by 2".

Of course for those wanting a multi functional device, 3G, internet etc it depends on personal need and the quantities of sacrifice.

I have a HTC HD2 running Froyo 2.2, and I love the size of screen. I do like the iphone 4 screen, and would love to see a larger version in a future model(that alone would not tempt me back to Apple though)

Those unsure of a 4.3inch Desire HD should not worry, as I find the form factor just about right, and Froyo 2.2 looks superb on a big screen.

15th Sept is likely to be the announcement date.

What the HTC Desire Z (QWERTY) aka HTC Vision could possibly look like:

Mobiles.co.uk have now removed all the info they had on HTC Ace and HTC Dezire Z from their 'Coming Soon' section. No HTC smartphones at all on that webpage. Hmmmm.

I can just tell the one thing im going to hate about this phone is the buttons at the bottom. They're going to be touch buttons aren't they? Would much prefer physical buttons. Will still probably buy the phone as its coming at just when i need to upgrade my phone.

HTC Desire HD to be possibly released on 18/19th October. HTC's press conference next Wed will probably announce the Desire HD for certain.

According to http://www.androidpolice.com/2010/09...ver-we-go-gaga, it may be that the Desire isn't going anywhere yet (if HTC really is adding some new colours to the line up)

Chances of an official Android 3.0 update just got higher.

That's been doctored. It's a well known fake floating around the net by a German site where someone has made the handset look to be a Windows mobile handset. They should be shot for such a crime

As I stated previously, the Desire will be here for a good while yet and I think it will continue to do well too.

However it's worth pointing out that the white HTC Desire won't be coming with the same screen that most of us Desire users currently enjoy.

HTC are having problems sourcing AMOLED screens from Samsung, so the white HTC Desire handsets are coming with SLCD displays. Most people won't notice the difference, but there are a few subtle differences. The SLCD is easier to see in direct sunlight, however colours are slightly better on AMOLED. AMOLED is also slightly brighter and gives a little more of a 'cleaner' appearance.

Personally I'm glad I've got AMOLED on mine, but I'm sure most won't care if they really want a white HTC Desire.

(It's also worth noting that standard HTC Desire handsets are being builty with SLCD on them too due to the shortage in AMOLED screens so new HTC Desire non-white handsets will also have the same non-AMOLED screen unlike the current batch that we all have)
