300ms?! thats not high at all! I average about 2000-3000! Once the speed test starts it takes about 75% of the progress bar before ANY speed is recorded too... its very poor!

It varies but at this moment 1.9 down and 1.6 up. Ping is high though 300mS.
300ms for a mobile network is about right.

It's not going to get lower than that using current technology.

Just did the test with 1 bar of 3G and got latency of 176, download of 1Mb and upload of 0.18 Mb. I too think o2 sucks when it comes to 3G, especially for the price they charge!

Can someone explain what 2G is? Is this when the phone loses 3G and gos to Edge or is when it goes right bak to the wee circle thing (I have an iPhone). Also, when people are mentioning 3.5G will the iPhone display this if you are getting that reception? I have never yet seen it display 3.5G and have had it over a year now

Thanks

3G networks can offer several different speed capabilities, 3.5G is used to describe a network with slightly faster speeds than 3G (HSDPA).

The iPhone doesn't offer any visible way to see what type of 3G network you are connected to.

The 2G network can provide either EDGE or GPRS. On the iPhone, GPRS is denoted by the dot symbol you mention.

Thanks. I understand it now

Well things certainly seem to be improving, test just now with 3 bars of 3G (about beat I can get here) I got 2.37mb down, 0.37mb up. Pretty impressive given two days ago I couldn't get past 0.35!

Certainly seems the new sim has resolved my problems

In other news I just checked 'my o2' and can upgrade to the 32gb iPhone 4 for a cost of £87. That's the phone cost plus early upgrade less what o2recycle would give for the 3GS. Very tempting!

Funny you should mention your sim. 2 of my friends were getting crap 3G signal and got a new sim and it sorted them out (don't know about speeds though). Due to my sim card being years and years old I ordered a new one a couple of days ago that should be here tomorrow. Will be interesting if my speeds improve after the new sim too...
