Dog is ill and I think it's my fault

Have been up all night with one of my dogs. He has diarrhea but is only producing jelly like stools now (sorry if too much info). It's just a drop at a time. He's also panting a lot, so I have the fan blowing on him. He's just generally looking sorry for himself and is restless and can't get comfortable. I think it's my fault as he had some of my daughter's pork last night. He's never had it before (only small pieces of ham). Would this make him ill? I feel so guilty if I've caused this.

I rang the vets this morning but they said to starve him, see how it goes and ring back tomorrow if he's no better. Thing is, I'm worried as he's getting up every 10 minutes and wants to go to the toilet but nothing is coming out. He seems in discomfort.

Is there anything I can do to help him? I'm laying on the floor with him, stroking him but he's just looking so fed up. I'm so neurotic over my animals.

I've had this a couple of times with my dogs. It could be a bout of colitis, this usually produces jelly-like stools. One of my dogs used to get it if they had chicken.

Starving for 24 hours is usually the best way to go. Is your dog still drinking? If it were me, I would see how your dog is this afternoon. If it is still looking uncomfortable or not drinking then I wouldn't wait until tomorrow. Sometimes an anti-inflammatory jag is needed, but he/should definitely be examined if there is any discomfort imo.

Phoned the vets back and have him booked in this afternoon.
He just seems so depressed and lethargic. Hopefully they will sort him out later.

I'm glad you are taking him. It's always better to be safe than sorry. Let us know how you get on.

Just got back from vets. It's just a tummy upset.
He perked right up before I took him...always the way.
So, panic over and I can relax.

Try some rice for his stools if it's still a bit runny which should harden it up.

Glad all is okay and it's only an upset stomach. My dog ate a bee the other day.

I usually starve mine for 12 hours when he has a stomach upset and then give him some bland food (boiled chicken and brown rice) for a couple of days afterwards, gradually mixing some of his regular food in with the rice.

I hope he's feeling better soon.

Yeah he's much better thank you. It was just a 24 hour thing. See my other thread though, he's gone and hurt his leg now...poor baby.

Some dogs can handle limited amounts of pork (or other pig products) - some can't handle it at all - it varies from dog to dog, and also what they are used to.

Funnily enough, my dog has no probs at all with pork or ham, but won't touch bacon..????
