I have a 5 month black moggie and he does not like my partner.
My partner and I don't live together, but on some occasions I left my cat with him for a week or 2 when I was travelling, but the cat never sat on his lap or let him stroke him unlike he does with me or anyone else.
The think that I cannot understand though is that if my partner picks him up and cuddle, as soon as the cat manages to escape his cuddles he starts licking himself furiously for about 5 minutes!!!
If my partner then picks him up again, once he gets free he starts licking himself again!
Why is he doing that? Is it to remove my partner' smell from himself or maybe to sort of reassure himself (mimicking his mum licking when he was a kitten?)?

If cats are used to one person, they seem to dislike anyone else. Least my last two have been like that. One of them would attack visitors she didn't like.

No, none of us smoke, and we don't really eat much garlic.
I was more interested in knowing why he licks himself after being handled rather than finding a solution to him not liking my partner.

My wife had her cat 7 years before we got married and I moved in ... now after 3 years he tolerates me as the 'person' that gives him fish (my wife can't stand the smell) ... but other than that he won't generally allow me to touch him much, whereas my wife can molly coddle him all she likes.

I'm of the opinion that cats lick themselves after being handled -- they all seem to do it -- either because they are thinking "Filthy human smell all over me, yuck!" or "I love the taste of human, yum!"

Cats clean themselves out of embarrassment normally. It's likely he doesn't like your partners smell and that wont change for a long time until he's used to him. You will want to tell your partner to put him down and stop picking him up as it will only be making it worse and the cat scared of him.

The cat will come to your partner when it wants attention and it shouldn't be forced upon it.

I suggest a small bowl of cat-cream and for him to stroke the cat lightly on the head/around the ears as it's drinking will encourage positive feelings towards your partner.

some cats are just stuck up like that, you know what there like.

We are separated now, but when i was with my partner we got 2 cats and they just never took to him in a big way.

Id go as far as saying one of the cats hated him, never go near him and would clean himself stupid if he was ever touched.

My cat didn't like my fiance at all at first. If he walked near her she ran away, wouldn't let him touch her, woudn't even eat the food he gave her- I could put the same brand flavour in her bowl and she'd scoff it. Shame cos he likes pets and cats especially. The one thing she does enjoy is a good brushing so I let him do it (just a bit at first) and now they are best pals. It took about a year for her to really get to like him (do cats really like or do they choose the least worst? ). She'll sit on his knee in preference to mine!

some cats just like one person more. Ella will come to me for hugs and cuddles and Effie is far more into my partner.

I would love Effie to act with me how she does with him, she lets me stroke her but that's it! It is just the way it is. Ella never goes to my partner for a stroke or a cuddle or always sits on my lap. Yet we have had them both for the same time and love them equally. It is the way it happens!
