I've heard about this guy called John Landis on DS, and apparently he's done some awful thing. Now excuse my ignorance, but could someone explain what he did wrong? I am 19 so perhaps it was before my time........

John Landis is a movie director , He directed The Blues Brothers , American Werewolf In London , Trading Places, Beverly Hills Cop , As well as Micheal Jackson's Thriller video

He's a producer/director and during making the Twilight Zone in the early 80's there was a serious accident on set which involved a helicoper and the male lead and 2 children. It was horrendous. I think 2 were beheaded and 1 was crushed - all of them died instantly I think.

He was charged but acquitted of a number of charges including child labour and manslaughter etc.

That is what I remember.

I think there is other stuff as well - think Google might be useful.

ETA - the main actor and one of the children were decapitated

What I remember it was only the lead actor who died. The family have tried over the years to get accountablity.

OK wrong one child did die.

Both children died - 1 beheaded the other crushed under the helicopter. Vic Morrow who was the lead was also decapitated. There's loads of links on the web about it.

I knew there was a helicopter accident but I had no idea it was so bad. Truly shocking, especially that there were children involved.

I saw the film back in the 80s and it was awful knowing that the actor had died in such an awful way.

Both children were killed, along with actor Vic Morrow who was the father of actress Jennifer Jason Leigh.

The helicopter was hovering 25ft above the three, when pyrotechnics caused the helicopter to crash down on them - all were killed instantly.

The accident happened after a long day of shooting, in the early hours of the morning - meaning that both the children (who were aged 7and 6) had worked far more hours than was legal.

Landis, Steven Spielberg and the pilot were all acquitted of child endangerment and involuntary manslaughter - both he families of the children and Vic Morrow accepted undisclosed out of court settlements.

There is a video of the accident - on youtube of all places! - and you can see that the accident was inevitable.

Wow! I only knew him as a director. My dad had the full version of the Thriller music video on video and it included the making of the video. I remember a segment with Landis. I have the Wiki entry. I am really shocked. Especially as this incident happened at the breakthrough of his career.

Still questionable as to whether Spielberg was there. People working on set say he was but when investigators arrived he wasn't. I think his people have always denied he was there when the incident happened. I don't think he was ever implicated in any charges. Was he?
