Help with nonsense restricting websites - 3 mobile
Hi there
I am on 3 and wanted to get onto a particular website which is a fertility clinic. I googled it and then when I clicked on it I got a quite awful screen which suggested that site was restricted and I needed to use my "lads" or "ladies" or "gay" pin number to access this site. It also linked to various pornographic sites. The site I wanted is a perfectly fine website that is easily accessible on o2 and other sites. Just gives information on medical issues. Nothing pornographic in any way or upsetting to young children. I tried other similar sites and they are fine. Some very sexually explicit sites are restricted which is expected. But why this site. www.lwc.co.uk Interestingly the other URL for this site www.londonwomensclinic.com worked. I complained to 3 who suggested I should pay £5 a month to take the restriction off. Why should I? They say this site could potentially hold information that young children should not see. But there are much worse sites out there unrestricted. is there anything I can do about this? I don't want to pay extra. Also could people on other networks try it for me? Thanks |

These sorts of blocks are very annoying. I thought they were supposed to remove them if you provide some sort of proof that you are over 18. Maybe try calling them again to ask?

Unfortunately, it seems that 3 don't offer a simple way to remove the block. IMO they shouldn't be allowed to filter unless they do.
They do let you use a credit card to prove your age (and charge you 99p), but it appears that works only for access to the 18+ stuff on their own portal. I would try and battle to see if they'll credit you £5 per month if you take the add-on. It is idiotic that they want you to pay more per month for the privilege of not using the "safety scissors" internet. |

Used to experience very odd and seeminlgy random blocks with 3 mobile.
Couldn't access Cardiff Gumtree for some reason (although other city's Gumtree pages were fine), and couldn't access Argos's website either. Apart from that it was fine - although becoming increasingly un-usable due to network overload. No such problems with Vodaphone mobile. |

I ask because I'm on 3 and, while using Opera Mini, just clicked on the link you've posted - no block of any kind, went straight through to the site. |

If anything that makes a mockery of the whole filtering idea - since Opera Mini is available on everything from low end phones to the highest of high end smartphones. |

Opera Mini uses a proxy, so to 3 it won't appear that you are trying to visit a blocked site. Try it in a different browser, if you have one.
Bolt and Skyfire; no problem. Opera Mobile and the default browser; block city, unless I use the alternate 3 settings, then it goes straight through. Quote:

I agree, the 3 filter blocks the most random of stuff too e.g. photo upload sites. That, along with the filter itself not being at all easy to switch off whatsoever, means - for me anyway - it's easier to find a workaround when necessary (like Opera Mini) as opposed to fiddling around setting up "restricted content access" PINs etc.

I left Three for this reason. There was no simple way to remove the block.
They still offer the "x-series" internet feed which doesn't go through a filter, but this wasn't compatible with my price plan so I couldn't have it. You could phone them and ask if you can have the unfiltered feed, but you might get the same problem I had and suddenly start racking up internet charges that you shouldn't be paying for - which you then have to argue to get removed. Also, the CS person might not know about it (when I phoned up the second time, when I was getting billed for it, the person thought I was trying to buy their walled-garden porn). |

Makes me glad i am on Orange. All i do is log into the online account and clear a check box to remove the online filter and i can get all the adult sites i need. On the other hand, T-Mobile also make customers use a credit card to pay the deposit to prove their age.
It makes me laugh though as if the person has a contract phone, then they're already over 18. By having this further step in place to me suggests the networks feel they're not doing enough to prove the true age of their users at point of sale. |

Still, why can't 3 provide a decent way to turn the filter off without having to pay monthly for the privilege - or better yet, make it opt-in for those on contract. |

I'm currently sat on a bus so have done just that:

If you're able to change the APN (Access point Name) to '3internet' in the settings you should be able to avoid this.
I had this problem with mobile broadband when the APN was 'three.co.uk'. However I'm not sure whether you still need to activate the account with a credit card to lift the bar (should only be a pound which you get credited with in any case). When the APN was 'three.co.uk' I lifted the bar and still it restricted gambling sites and the such like. With '3 Internet' you're pretty much free to browse as you like. Depends if you can get access to the settings on the mobile though. |

So 3 are saying that they put the block on to stop children seeing such sites, but, for a fiver the kids can see the sites....Nothing but profiteering from adult material....Two faced or what!!!??
It's not blocked on O2, then again I've never had anything blocked by them. |

Has anyone got some more up to date info on this?
I'm seeing mixed reports on other sites. Some people say they remove all blocks if you phone and ask, others say that they don't. I don't want to access their porn - even if it was free. They're blocking sites like urbandictionary.com which is in no way pornographic. I'm on an iPhone so 3 doesn't let me change the APN. |

I can access anything from my mobile. I bought it from a local Threestore on contract, i wasn't asked about the adult filter when i joined. I believe you can take some ID to a Threestore and they will remove the restriction.
I seem remember reading something about mobile networks having to add these sorts of blocks to mobile internet by default. Rik. |

You bumped a thread from 18 months ago, if you get a new contract now from Three I believe they don't content filter, they had a lot of complaints so they now don't auto filter everyone, but the best thing is to give them a call. I asked them to turn it off and they did.

I've been with 3 for years - long before mobile broadband came about. When it first appreared there were restrictions until you could prove who you were to 3 even though I'm on contract with them. I seem to remember it was a simple question and answer session then the restrictions were lifted.
Now I'm on the One Plan and sometimes use my phone to tether my laptop. There are some sites which when accessed allow everything bar videos to show, but on others everything is fine. |

Yeah the situation for new connections has changed since July 2010 when this thread was opened. Now most connections are not content filtered by default I believe.
You only have to call support to get them turned off anyway. |

When tethering and watching videos, use hotspot shield on your computer. Everything will load then.

You only have to call support to get them turned off anyway. The reason I asked is that my new Pay Monthly Three SIM (One Plan) had the content filter on (it was redirecting to the site mentioned by the OP) when I tried it yesterday. When I try it today (urbandictionary) it's working. I wonder if it takes a little while to update after setting up the PIN, although the PIN only seems to relate to the Three "walled garden". EDIT: A more obvious porn site brings up a different message telling me to call 3 or use the credit card validation that's not secure. Just in case anybody is curious, I'm not looking at porn sites and rushing over to Urbandictionary to find out what they're on about! |
