Which artists do you think this applies to?

Unfortunately, Alanis Morissette. I love her albums that follow Jagged Little Pill, Supposed Former Infatuation Junkie being my favourite, but the sales speak for themselves. People didn't get what they expected with SFIJ (it was a bit of a middle finger up to those who expected another "angry woman" album) and so sales suffered. She's still my favourite thing in the world though.

Since "JCB Song", there's been nothing.

Natalie Imbruglia
She has never seen any huge success since Torn and her debut album

Shame as Wrong impression, Shiver and Glorious are just as good.

Garbage. They have had other top 10 singles but they will never escape from Stupid Girl. It's a shame because i actually think it's one of their weakest

'Artists who failed to outgrow their breakthrough hit' sounds like a PC term for 'one hit wonder'?

no, just people whose biggest hit was their first and have never matched it's success. some might argue britney falls into this category?

You could say Britney but i think Womanizer has equalled Baby one more time now. In the US it has.

Leona Lewis hasn't escaped the shadow of Bleeding Love just yet.

I think Leona Lewis is very much looking like she won't outgrow Bleeding Love. Maybe a bit early to say that but I'm not sure she has the versatility to re-invent herself and do something different enough to stand out.

Edit: whoops - didn't see post above. Soz.

Ke$ha,

And in the UK bavy One More Time Time sold 1,450,000 and compare that to the successs of her other singles she's gone downhill. Her second biggest seller is Oops I DiD iT Again which sold around about 500,000 which is not even half of what her debut sold. And i can't see womanizer selling more than 400,000.

I wouldn;t say she has gone down hill at all. So she hasn't sold a single like Baby one more time. Well neither will Rihanna with Umbrella but she has continued and continued to roll out the hits. Everyone will have that one single they can't out sell like everyone will have that one album they can't outsell.

Womanizer is one of Britneys bigger selling singles in the UK (I think it came 4th on a countdown I watched a few months ago) but i don't think it will be remembered as much as Britney classic like 'Toxic', 'Slave 4 U', 'Oops' and 'Everytime' will be

Oops I Did It Again?
Toxic?
Womanizer?

Unless I'm misinterpreting your question, I don't think anyone could say that Britney falls into this category. She's had a hugely successful career since then, both commercially, and more recently critically (with the likes of Toxic and Blackout).

Leona Lewis would definitely qualify in the US, but I'd say over here Run has been just as successful (not to mention that Bleeding Love wasn't her first UK hit). I'd also say Arctic Monkeys with I Bet You Look Good On The Dancefloor, Alphabeat with Fascination and Gabriella Cilmi with Sweet About Me.

Yeah that's true. I think people tend to forget A moment like this was her first single, whether it was a cover or not. Although some people don't know Kelly clarkson sung this originally as it was never a hit here.

Well, it depends how we're classifying it.

Katy Perry and Ke$ha will probably never grow out of their respective debuts, even with successful following singles.

Then there's the Amy Winehouse/Corrine Bailey Rae/Duffy/Amy Macdonald/Adele/Alphabeat types who all have their token debut hits.

Sadly Macy Gray has failed to outgrow 'I Try'-she actually has released some brilliant new material but nothing has had anything like the success she had with that song!

Well actually amy winehouse's debut song bombed. Her big hit was from her second album which was Rehab. Plus amy mcdonald has never gained a big hit from any of her two albums, she is more of an album seller.

But that's because Jagged Little Pill is actually much, much better than anything else she's done

but she was known tho.. she had quite a bit of hype around her when her debut came out and was nominated for awards etc. Granted she wasn't as big as she is now but it would be foolish to call her an unknown

Even then, I would consider Valarie a bigger hit than Rehab, so in my opinion, Amy Winehouse is out.

Britney could technically fall into this catagory, but really, she isn't just going to be remembered for HMBOMT

Ting Tings (so far) haven't met the success of Thats Not My Name. It wasn't their first single but was def their breakthrough hit.
