Just getting excited awaiting "Sherlock" on Sunday and just had a thought of wanting to see Matt Smith's Doctor meet up with Cumberbatch's Holmes.

Production-wise it would be easy, but I don't know if it would work bringing such similar characters together.

What does everyone think?

If it hasn't already been done I would prefer to see the Doctor meet Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. Maybe the Doctor could be his inspiration

How would that work when Sherlock Holmes is a fictional character and the Doctor is........er......sorry, forget I spoke.

PS - should read my links - the 4th Doctor meets ACD in "Evolution" and infers is the inspiration for Holmes.

What's the betting Cumberbatch will be Matt's replacement as the Doctor when the time comes?

He was top of my list before Matt was announced - now we know why he didn't get it!

Anyway, would a crossover with the two current TV series work?

That was really my question.

Personally I think it would be fine for Doctor Who but less so for Sherlock. I don't feel Sherlock Holmes stories benefit from events beyond the bounds of what current science could explain.

Interesting that the Moff sees the characters as opposites:

Mind you, he thinks 9pm-10.30pm is pre-watershed ...

It definitely would be interesting.....and with the right story anything can work...and Doctor Who is apt at working its magic around any genre...so yeah crossover shouldn't be difficult!

Would be a good story as Conan Doyle was obsessed with spiritualism. I love Benedict Cumberbatch been very impressed with him since he played Stephen Hawking. I actually thought he might be up for the 11th Doctor! Only problem with Sherlock is that it seems to be only a 3 parter!?

That's quite intriguing, but actually I don't want him to be in DW next year, because he's on my list of people I'd like to play the Doctor after the sad day when lovely Matt leaves.

I read that as "Only appearing in Doctor Who if its a major part". Hinting at the main role? Despite their many differences I'd have still thought the two roles might be a bit too similar for an actor to want to play both.

i read it the same way,he said that he didn't want to do just one episode, then went a bit coy when the interviewer asked if he would like to play the Doctor,im beginning to think maybe Moffat has sounded him out(albeit in a non official way) about taking over from Matt when he finally hangs up his Tweed Jacket and Bow Tie
