But that illustrates your point about the specials being part of a story arc - I liked it more after I came to see it as part of the story of Donna and the development of her character. In the stand alone specials you don't get that involvement.

I also agree that the writers may try too hard with the specials to make them more special and it can be counter productive, because they cram too much in and it becomes OTT? They get "special stars" like Kylie and she isn't that great (imo).

Apparantly for 2009 it was specials or nothing and I vastly preferred the specials to nothing, but I wondered then and I wonder now if a mini-series wouldn't have been better? Say 6 episodes with the regen at the end and Matt taking over at Christmas?

Anyway, it didn't happen, so speculation is fruitless.”

Well just so you know we don't agree on everything, I actually didn't mind Kylie in Voyage Of The Damned. She and Tennant were probably the only two good things about it, oh apart from that fella who played Jobel in Revelation Of The Daleks.

Yes, I'm glad we had some Who last year, we shouldn't really want to moan about the fact that we did, but they were that bad that we had too!!!!!

Hindsight is a wonderful thing, and as you say speculation is somewhat academic now!

Really enjoyed the specials but would have really liked one last DT season. It was noticeably absent in 2009!

The 'specials' were a bit of a mixed bag for me...

Planet of the dead was (in my opinion) a total waste of budget and time. The guest star didn't have time to be properly established and so we really didn't give a damn about her. Not the fault of the actress who worked with what she was given.

Waters of Mars was (in my opinion) the best of the specials and I have rewatched it a few times. At least it built to a satisfying climax.

End of Time part 1 was ok but suffered from a totally naff 'hey presto' way of bringing the Master back.

End of Time part 2 was an attempt to cram in far too much stuff and consequently felt disjointed and a disappointment.
As one who spoke out for the return of the Timelords I felt as though they were both summoned and dismissed far too easily.
The naff 'valedictory lap' of ten felt contrived and self indulgent.

I would have prefered The year to have been:

Christmas Special

Easter Special to have been Waters of Mars

then

A slightly less contrived End of Time on Christmas Day

Then a nice long gap and Matt's Doctor appearing when he did the next year.

In addition, I'd like to see the series moved back to October as it just 'feels' more appropriate at that time of year. Plus it doesn't have to compete with summer sports and bright evenings!

it ruined my love of dr who really looking back , why could they have a series and then Matt truns up , I was so sad all year and hated the fact it was spilt up at xmas and new years day , I perfered to have been just xmas and Donna gets better and Matt appears
and donna vanishes into the crack in the wall(joke)
Amy ! Tennant had a too ott ending looking back and why just get wilf to kill him off

found it darker than Moffatts series at least Amy got her raggedly dr
