Yes that was definitely a great moment.... I loved the cleverness of that. Knowing that we know more than the Doctor was also very touching...

That must have been the best news ever!!!

Although that was a bit of a cheat. Jo had suggested the Daleks might be involved earlier in the story because of the Ogrons, but the Doctor dismissed the idea for no obvious reason. So when they did appear not a complete surprise.

I don't think that's true, he didn't die between stories.

Also, worst surprise ever was the Doctor's surprise at the end of Planet Episode 1 on seeing the Daleks - had he forgotten that he was chasing them after Episode 6 of Frontier! Poor script editing by Terrance.

No, he didn't - there were plans to bring the Master back for what was to be a final showdown between him and Perwtee's Doctor in Season Ten … a rematch that sadly never happened.

I suspect this might have been debunked at some point. But my impression was more that the Doctor was surprised by an invisible Dalek rather than just because he found a Dalek.

I think if I was around when The Time Meddler was broadcast, the end of episode 3 when it was discovered the Monk also had a TARDIS must have been a bit of a surprise as well. I mean, no-one knew then that others existed from The Doctor's planet let alone have a TARDIS!

There are also the surprises that aren't so much of a shock because you've read about it somewhere. The Daleks appearing at the end of Army Of Ghosts would have been a gobsmacking moment had it not been leaked they were doing battle with the Cybermen for the first time. And even though I didn't know Professor Yana was The Master at the time it was tranmitted, that was no surprise either as I'd read that somewhere too he was returning.

One of the worst Master 'Surprises' was the end of Part 1 of Survival. I think the BBC practically telegraphed he was returning in this story and he wasn't exactly hidden in that tent was he?!

One of my other favourites surprises was in Masque Of Mandragora when it seemed Hiernymous had killed The Doctor before The Doctor had destroyed him. It seemed Hiernymous had won the day, he got every one back to the temple only for the Manadragora Helix to be destroyed and then it was revealed to be The Doctor! Great Stuff!

A pleasant surprise was the regeneration of the Doctor into Hugh Grant. And Richard E. Grant. And the bashful one. But not Joanna Lumley, That was a nasty shock.

They didn't, I unfortunately found out during the Moffat two parter.

Bit of a master stroke by RTD actually, because I think that all helped add to the hype come the latter part of the series.”

well said - I agree!

Someone got there before me but "The Face of Boe, they called me..." was an awesome one! Also Wilf knocking 4 times, will never forget giggling at him knocking on the glass as the doctor was broken but happy on the floor, and then within milliseconds realising what was happening! Very good stuff!!

For some reason that was more of a eyebrow raiser than a jaw dropping moment for me but it was a neat touch!!!!

I've never understood how and when the switch took place, so to me that ending was a big let down.

I would assume The Doctor used his body armour to drain Hieronymous's body of the Helix energy within him. As he no longer had any physical form, it was just a matter of taking the costume and putting it on.

The Cyberman return in Earthshock...talk of the playground (well in geek corner anyway!) for the whole week!

Seeing the thousands of daleks flying around and shouting in unison at the end of Bad Wolf...classic!

It was a wonderful surprise for me when the first Doctor regenerated into the second (though they didn't call it regeneration then, of course).

I don't think I knew what was going to happen but there was this weird, eccentric, funny bloke with check trousers and a beatle haircut and a lugubrious face, playing his recorder and talking in riddles. I'd loved the programme before, but I was absolutely enchanted by the second Doctor from the moment I saw him and I still am.

In New Who there was a small moment in Human Nature when one of the boys asks permission to give Timothy a beating and the Doctor/John Smith says "permission granted". That really shocked me.

I know its generally thought of as a weak episode, but the bit in 'The Doctor's Daughter' where The Doctor picks up the revolver and points it at that Captain's head..

An accidental foreshadowing of 'The End of Time', I'd like to think!

You are so lucky, that you saw the "first regeneration", because it must have been truly wonderful and unusual.

I also agree with you about the beating, it was really shocking and well written. John Smith was almost callous, but he would have been compared to what we do now (although when I went to school, teachers could still give you a clip round the ear).

Yes, it was the norm for 1913, of course, but coming from the Doctor, it was a real shock to my system!

Of course, he wasn't himself at the time

To this viewer, watching the repeats on UK GOLD after series 1 had aired on BBC1, it was quite shocking, mainly because I'd been told there would never be a Dalek episode on UK Gold due to the fallout with the Nation estate...

Then the Daleks appeared behind the Master!

I remember starting a thread on here I think, something along the lines of "Daleks and The Master: so who would betray who first?" and then finding out the episode that was cut out was not a giant team-up session between the two evilist creations in the universe!

Would've been an amazing shock if it wasn't for the fact they'd put it in the bloody "next time!" trailer!

I think the backlash from that made sure they never had such a big spoiler in the trailers again.....so when the Daleks appeared in Army of Ghosts, it was a MASSIVE shock because all the pre-episode publicity had focused on the Cybermen.

I can remember thinking why dosn't the Dr come back and rescue him - it was so sad to see him watch the earth coming towards him knowing he was going to die - especially after he used his gold star to kill the cyderman
