The thing with Mark Gattis is, as great an actor as he is, I keep expecting something absurd a la League of Gentleman to happen.

I think Harry Enfield had a similar problem when he tried to do more straight acting.

I just watched on iPlayer. Overall I enjoyed it but I was a bit disappointed with the ending.

I thought when the cabbie turned up and said he got the victims to kill themselves by "just talking to them" that he was going to try and do a heavy psychological number on Holmes. Of course as Holmes is a "high-functioning sociopath" it wouldn't work and Holmes would turn the tables on him.

Just threatening to shoot him if he didn't take the pill was a bit dull.

But, as I said, overall it was very good. I'll be watching next week.

Anyone know what it was??”

"Mrs Turner next door's got married ones." She whispered "married ones".

But surely the twist was that Holmes knew the gun wasn't real, but still was prepared to take the pill, just to prove that he could work out which was the safe one.
To show that his mind was greater than Cabbie's.

(My mind was also going down the "both pills are poison but Cabbie has already taken the antidote" route)

Its just not as much of a "mind f**k" as i thought it was going to be. He didn't kill them by talking to them - he threatened them with a gun.

And Holmes was right when he said it was 50-50, there was no way of using his deductive powers to figure it out. If he was really sure he'd have taken the pill even as the guy was dying.

Although I like your thought that the guy had already taken the antidote.

'Derren' Brown would've known.

I thought she said 'married once', which is probably why I didn't think it made much sense at the time...

I liked the awkward exchange:

"I heard you were abroad somewhere getting shot at. What happened?"

"I got shot"

and

""

"Enough for a lifetime, far too much"

"Wanna see some more?"

"Oh God yes"

Jesus no!! Honestly, if they did that I would stop watching. It's an atrocious thought and would be pandering of the worst possible sort.

I really don't see how it could be so awful.

I hate how people dismiss the idea of a different gender take on established characters as 'pandering' plenty of writers would love to change things in such a manner as it gives them plenty of opportunity to approach stale characters in an entirely new manner.

I'm wondering if Moriarty isn't a person in this but a society, like the Illuminati perhaps. Didn't Holmes question what 'a Moriarty' is at the end?
If not, give the role to Tennant I say, once he's done with Fright Night.
Other than that. Afghanistan looked nothing like what we see on the TV and a lot like green and leafy Britain. Maybe Watson is fibbing.

I've just re-watched on iplayer and thought certain DS members would like the exchange during press conference near start.

Lestrade answers a question from a journo.
Then Donovan whispers "Daily Mail" to him...

And he rephrases his answer in a more earnest fashion.... I was just waiting for the phrase "broken Britain" to be trotted out!

I wouldnt watch if Tennant was in it. I detest his ridiculous overacting. People who rate him wouldnt know a good actor if he fell on them.

And then go the whole hog and have Simm as Moriarty.

No wait Derek Jacobi. That would actually work for me.

Only 2 let-downs:

1) At times music was too loud. Drowned out actors (might be my hearing, as I suffer from tinnitus, and wife didn't seem to have same problem)

2) Knowing Baker St well I kept thinking "Too close to the Marylebone Road end", and "Where's the station entrance?"

Next week it is starting half an hour earlier - will have to decide between last half hour of Top Gear or first half hour of Sherlock (unless they also move TG forward by half an hour ).”

Top Gear is on at 9.30 next week, so will have to be final half-hour of Sherlock or first half hour of Top Gear!

Well, he didn't actually write it. The characters, plot and many scenes are taken from the original source. It has been modified, partly due to modernisation and merging different stories (the Watson phone analysis comes from "sign of Four", but most of the story is 'study in scarlet'). So it's more like a screenplay adaptation than an original work.

These days no-one would be able to do it without a big sexual chemistry will-they/won't-they kind of thing

OR

she will bat for the other side and will be an eyebrow-lifting know-it-all who will be just slightly smarter - or think she is.
