True, but he's also had a pretty good crack at writing a Victorian adventure story via his Lucifer Box novels, in particular The Vesuvius Club.

What was with the poor use of the subtitles I loved the use of them in ep 1 especially in the scene where Sherlock investigated the dead body. But in this when they were pointless especially in the scene when Sherlock looked at the A-Z book you clearly see the word in the book then Sherlock reads the word and then the subtitle came up why???

I am another who loved the 1st episode and thought the second was okay I was thinking of getting the box set when released but now I am having doubts.

^a box set containing 1 disk with the 3ep series on, right ?!

Can't think of any way they'd get me to pay out ~£14.99 (my guess) for a 3 ep series, even with a whole bunch of commentaries and behind the scenes.

Moriarty was Shan's boss (hence the "M" on the Computer Screen at the end) and this entire case was a scheme taken over by him to bait Sherlock (hence the complicated nature of the killing machine: Moriarty didn't want people dead, just to prove he was clever than Holmes)...all in time for next week's finale I would imagine ”

I see that, but really? M's command "throttle him but just a little bit":

Oh well, roll on next week

I doubt M commanded anything to do with the throttling. The intruder was caught in the girls flat by Sherlock, and knowing not to kill him, made him unconscious.

Although as a wild card M is also short for Mycroft (who played a big part in the first episode).

Going back to the books thing. Surely SH missed a big trick when asking for them. He should also have asked for their Kindles, iPads and Smartphones to complete the modern rewrite.

But the cypher was the product of the Triads, not the couriers therefore it was their method of transmission that mattered - they used painted symbols as "tags" - who would notice a tag on a wall and know what it meant...whereas even my local council can hack my emails if they show enough just cause...imagine what GCHQ has the ability to do to electronic media.

I saw it on Play for 7.99, I think it was. You get the unaired pilot as well. I don't think 8 quids too much.

^unaired pilot ?! <- is this an actual new ep and not just a first-edit of ep1 (yes I could google but CSI Miami is about to start)

I did have my tongue in my cheek when I wrote my post!
My point was that Holmes only focused on the physical books and ignored the electronic equivalents.
Given the references to modern communications in episode 1 - drawing inferences from the usb charging point on a phone, the email password, lack of a phone on the victim. It would not have surprised me if Holmes had failed to find a paper copy of a book the 2 bankers had and then deduced that they must have a ebook their possession and looked for that.

60 min edit of episode one I think.

The unaired pilot is actually a completely different production I believe, maybe based on the same story I'm not sure about that, but I think I read they filmed that way before and then decided to change format and filmed a new first ep.

So the unaired is their first attempt which they deemed unsatisfactory and so redid the whole thing - doesn't scream must-see but that's just me.

Might a book in electronic form be susceptible to format changes? As long as you make sure that everyone is using the same edition of the A-Z* you don't have to worry about whether the first word on p17 has suddenly become the last word on p16. Whereas with an ebook I don't think you could ever be sure that the publishers wouldn't have fiddled around with the layout. Maybe it doesn't happen, but I'd want to be really certain before relying on it for communications that could make or lose me £9,000,000!

*(Which would mean buying a new copy every time it was reprinted, but that won't happen that often, and if the triads can't finance the cost of a new A-Z per member every now and then, crime really doesn't pay!)

Well the unaired pilot is what they show to broadcasters to try and get it commissioned. Then the commissioners decide if they want it, don't want it, or want it with changes. Obviously they enjoyed it, so commissioned it, but made some changes.

I saw the Buffy unaired pilot and they changed quite a bit of it (the actress playing Willow is the biggest difference).

I'd certainly be interested to see the pilot, and how much it's changed etc. I think it's a nice thing to put on the DVD, not all shows bother with things like that.

A fair point, although the writers probably didn't consider an ebook at all. The page numbering may change if you change the font size on an ebook (to make the writing larger for folks with poor eyesight.)

The original story makes Watson suggest The Bible. Holmes points out that there are too many different editions of it for the page and line thing to work. They finally hit upon Whitaker's Almanac.

I like David Butcher's little write-up in the Radio Times for next Sunday's episode:

The Great Game

especially

... whatever you do, don't quit before the dark final showdown. It'll send you to bed with a shiver.

Also, on finding out where said "final showdown" is to take place, I'm now 100% certain of who Moriarty is.

P.S. And good news - Lestrade is back on Sunday, as is Mycroft.

Me too.

One of the few programmes I'd bother to watch at the time of broadcast, rather when later when I feel like it. Brilliant.

I've accidentally read hints as to who it is. I wonder if we're on the same wavelength

Well, people, you really ought to put your predictions down in writing so we can know if any of you were correct
