The problem for me was that we'd already been lead to believe in episode one that Mycroft/Gatiss was Moriarty and so perhaps we were expecting something similar (and for me it would've been preferable than this wet-beind-the-ears actor we had instead).

I presumed the Moriarty we saw wasn't the actual Moriarty - just a puppet like the rest of the people he was using as puppets. And that the real one was the one at the end of the laser thing.

That's what I was thinking. Maybe that's why I'm disappointed.
It was still superb though. Benedict is just fantastic.

The langauge used between the two is very similar to what was said tonight - the threat to withdraw from Moriarty, Holmes' refusal to do so...The way the lines were said by Moriarty is very different though.
I liked Benedict as Holmes (even though my favourite "traditional" Holmes is Basil Rathbone) - I think he brought things up-to-date well

I think the actor who played Moriarty is Andrew Scott (correct me if I'm wrong
) and he's been acting for a while and won an Olivier award for his work in the theatre so I don't think the BIB is accurate.

I'm slightly baffled by the negative reaction as well.
Personally I enjoyed the portrayal but we've only seen a tiny glimpse of the character.
I've really enjoyed sherlock. Really good fun, i suspect I will run out to buy it on DVD as soon as possible.

Ut it wasn't really 5 minutes, it was 4.5 hours of leading to that moment. We were constantly being told that he was behind everything, so you start to form images in your mind and some weak, diminutive, half-witted, humungously camp Graham Norton wannabe was not how I pictured him.
Also if you are a fan of the books you have a lot of information about Moriarty and he was nothing like that portrayal.
Like I've said, I have more of a problem with the way he was portrayed rather than the way he was written.
I'm very happy with Andrew Scott as Moriarty. He's a fine theatre actor just like Cumberbatch and has won an Olivier Award, something even Benedict hasnt achieved yet.

Me too, whenever a character gets 'introduced' without any obvious reasons it sends alarm bells. It's the 'abc' of crime fiction.
I think some of the geeky guys on here were hoping for a Dr Who guy to play the role of Moriarty (yawn). Thank god the overacting Tennant or the ghastly Barrowman arent anywhere near it.
I'm not usually one for going over the top, but I thought that was utterly perfect.
Moriarty was an excellent piece of casting, creepy incarnate. They needed to avoid the cliche 'arch-villain' and I think they got it spot on.
A small part of me thinks it might be best left there. It's almost too perfect an ending to risk spoiling in another series.
