Best brands for mp3/mp4 players?

I'm interested to know which brand and make everyone thinks is best of mp3/mp4 players. I know that Apple has a lot of fans of the different types of iPod, but I'm not a big fan, because it just seems like everyone's got one these days, and they're quite expensive when you can easily get things just as good for cheaper.

I love my Sony Walkman mp4 player. It cost me about £70, and does everything I could possibly need. Love it

I like the Cowon MP3s they have great sound & long battery life, but they are expensive.

I haven't had any Sony audio kit for years (bar headphones). They definitely used to be amongst the best, unsure if thats still the case.

Cowon are the ones tended to be viewed as amongst the best for sound quality these days.

I just like the sound of my sansa clip, turns out to be one of the best sounding players I've ever owned.

My next Sony player is going to be the NWZ-A845.

Be careful:

"As others have said, this player isn't loud enough",

"Secondly the volume just doesn't go high enough! You may think that I'm just another person who likes to ruin their hearing with loud music but it's not true. Full volume on this player is almost identical to half-volume on my previous Walkman (without the AVLS being on). And whilst it is true that with the built-in noise canceling you shouldn't need to turn it up any more, I still found it to be very quiet."

The iPod Nano is also cheaper and a What Hi-Fi award winner.

I'd have to say Creative produce the best MP3 players. Excellent sound quality from my Creative ZEN X-Fi using its sound enhancements.

My sis gas a creative zen and it's very plasticy and the usb cable is about 4 inches long, good for laptops, rubbish for desktops.

Sony x series is great.

I have good experiences with Sony players, now I have Zune HD. A bit expensive, but it has all I need, very good audio quality, too. I am not buying another player till this one goes to its maker

The older ones did feel cheaper, and the cables they provide are a joke, but a USB cable is pennies these days.

I couldn't be bothered carrying around a separate MP3 player now a days when smart phones do it very well.

I prefer to use a stupid phone that can actually make a phonecall. Those bells and whistles devices can do everything, but usually nothing of it properly.

I've tried a few - Creative Zen, Ipod Nano, Sony Walkman, Sandisk Sansa and the Sony is by far and away the best for sound quality and battery imo, with it's only weakness being the inability to create playlists on it - they can only be created in media player, but I prefer drag and drop rather than syncing. The only smartphone I've found any good was a Nokia 5800 which sounded very good and even the speaker had a decent volume level plus the others have such poor battery life that using them for music can bugger making/receiving calls.

I have a cheap generic 'no name' MP3 player cost me a tenner but I use Sony headphones which cost about £15 and the sound is excellent.
