Similarly criticism has at times been levelled at Ben for being a pretentious 'posh boy' with a lack of community spirit and a penchant for moaning about his surroundings but Corin, whilst not averse to pointing out to Ben his flaws if prompted, appreciates him as an interesting and essentially good-natured guy.

The point with the Ben/Corin friendship is that they are very open and accepting of themselves and their different backgrounds and don't for one minute let ridiculous notions of snobbery, inferiority complexes or 'class prejudice' get in the way of being friends.

It's all rather admirable and sweet, IMO ”

I love it when a friendship or relationship crosses all the usual assumed barriers of education, class, just generally things in common. None of that is needed when the chemistry just works between 2 people and they get one another at a deep level. I don't always think you can put it into words either, why some people connect with each other and yet not with other people who look as if they'd have a more obvious connection.

A lot of people were suprised when my o/h and I got together as there didn't seem to be anything obvious we'd got in common (we look a bit alike in terms of colouring, tho oddly one of our kids looks nothing like either of us ). My husband often says I have a "faulty gene" that attracts me, from my fairly well educated "rising" middle class (from working class 2 generations ago) background to "bad boys" like him!! And we've been married 30 years this year. Not that I'm suggesting B & C will have a relationship as such, just friendships in general.

On further thoughts I wonder if part of it is respect. I often think if love has grown cold in a relationship but you have respect, there's something to work with.

I think Corin respects Ben because he's learned and educated and many of the things she probably has aspired to and maybe didn't have the opportunity of. He respects her for her survivor mentality among other things. She has not only come through one of the most painful life experiences you ever could, but has maintained her Joie de Vivre in the process. I think he admires that, as he can get down quite readily, but again sees in her something to aspire to.

Great post anyway, Phil. I'm just reiterating what you've said, only you said it much better, LOL

I think there something in that - I remember Ben in the early days questioning other HMs why/how Corin can be so happy and appreciative when she's faced such tragedy - the way he sounded so baffled and curious when he asked makes me believe he was geniunely looking for the answer. And I remember him asking Corin how she managed to deal with frustrations when he had a very bad day.

I think he admires her for handling life how she does, wishes he was like her in a way, and maybe trying to learn from her.

They'd be an ideal final two, hugging on the sofa as Davina announces the winner.
