By the end of the year they could be as many as 16 stars axed from the soap in a huge shake up BBC boses want next years Eastenders to be better than ever as the soap hits 20 years on screen. Also a huge load of fresh charactors are planned including a another new family.

I don't see how they can get rid of 16 characters - there's only about 20/25 in the cast now, and as the Ferrieras' contracts have been renewned, it looks like it might just be them.

Whats the source behind this?

Preferably get rid of them all. Say a terrorist attack on Walford killing all with no survivors.

A dirty bomb in the Queen Vic, turning the entire cast into walking zombies, allowing the joint casts of Corrie and Emmerdale to take out their shotguns and put them all out of their misery, Shaun of the Dead-stylie.

Perfect.

Then the Beeb can resurrect Eldorado.... *joke*

20 years since the soap 'hit our screens' - like a fly on the windscreen.

'Better than ever?' What, you mean, better than 'absolutely diabolical' and 'virtually unwatchable'? Shouldn't be difficult. Then again, with that Berridge berk in charge...

Good point. C4 dropped the axe on Brookside just before its 20th anniversary and then disappeared a year later. So will EE go the same way?

Its very strange how 2 soaps both got/are getting worse approaching their 20th anniversary!

It's clear that none of you are Eastenders' biggest fans and from reading other posts it seems that they are not too keen either. But how come then that it always wins best soap when everyone appears to hate it and claims that it's on its "last legs?" Who is voting for it???

The reason that Brookside is gone and EastEnders is going through such a bad patch is because all of their characters are just pawns that are used to cover social issues...rather than to develop characters like Coronation Street does (and to some extent Emmerdale). In the 20 years of the 2 soaps' history they have gone through nearly all of the main social issues and numerous disasters..and I think viewers are just bored of it.

A few years ago EastEnders had a much better and well established cast. Yet today, there are about 5 or 6 established characters that people kind of care about. But no one gives a toss about the lives of all the rest - the Ferreiras, the (what seems) millions of other 'floating' characters with no real place...and even the Slaters since they've been worn out because of all the sensational storylines.

If EastEnders has any chance of getting back on top (I don't want it to though!) it has to really really really work hard on developing characters and make the character the centre of storyline...not the issue that they are covering.

Well call me a cynic but I have noticed recently on here that a lot of 'new' posters are very pro EE. Probably just a coincidence or BBC employees and funny how all the so called spoilers about Deadenders seem to be leaked by new posters too.

MMmmm strange that

Obviously all of the people involved in EE are making their families, cousins, nieces and nephews vote for it, then they are probably bribing young children to vote for it too,.... a dirty tricks campaign it ever I've heard one. I think it gets the sympathy vote. Everyone knows that they should not have even come close to winning this year

Sorry, but I dont work for the BBC and I voted for it.I admit that I dont enjoy every storyline, but thats true of all soaps.A lot of people do still like EE best and would hate it to be axed.It may be on a bit of a low right now but at some time so have all the other soaps,I think it will bounce back, so try not to write it off just yet.

I think that everyone should stop watching Eastenders in protest! The last few weeks have been crap, even crapper when you compare it to how brilliant Coronation Street is at the moment

If everyone on here hates eastenders so much, why were you all interested enough to read this thread and other eastenders threads for that matter.

You will probably find that as TV viewers we are interested in all aspects of TV including the Crock of Sh*t that Eastenders has become. Most posters here probably were avid EE fans at one time and are so disappointed the way it has turned out. What used to be unmissable TV has now become Unbearable TV.

Eastenders RIP

The reason that Eastenders is so crap is because it is terribly written and a lot of the new characters that have been brought in are really truly awful. It's as simple as that. I don't think it has that much to do with social issues. Look at Vickie, Mickey, Tariq, Ronny, Spencer, Gus, Juley........it goes on and on. The latest ploy is to try to introduce some comedy in to the programme - the antics of Mickey and Mo and Gus and Juley, and not forgetting Spencer. Does anybody really find it funny? I can't believe that the writers and producers of the programme, when they see it, laugh at these pathetic attempts at comedy. Surely thay can see that it's crap? Mickey seems to think he's Del Boy (another one - he must realise that they already attempted that one with Alfie Moon, with Spencer as Rodney and Nana as Grandad/Uncle Albert and it didn't work then either). The writing of the programme is utterly pathetic at the moment and is an unsult to the intelligence of viewers. It's like it is written by schoolkids. How many times are we going to see someone who has something important to tell someone else but can't manage to get round to it so doesn't say what they have to say(latest was Jim who couldn't manage to tell Dot that he'd found out where Sonia and Martin were because she was busy prattling on to Pauline, so he leaves a note and just goes off to find them on his own. For goodnes sake!)? And how many more babies are going to be born not knowing who the father is (I'm assuming here but I think it's a pretty fair assumption based on past predictable Eastenders storylines that we are going to see this all over again with Kat/Alfie/Andy)?

Coronation Street, which I used to watch, fell in to the same trap a few years ago when it just became a comedy show (with the Duckworths, Reg Holdsworth, etc.....) and for me it was the ruin of the programme. By all accounts it is now going back to proper drama and is infinitely better than Eastenders. The producers and writers of Eastenders should take note. And please, as a minimum, get rid of Spencer, Vickie, Mickey, Gus and Juley.
