Getting Orange to replace a 2G sim with a 3G one

How easy is it to get Orange to send you a 3G sim and move your account to it so that you can get 3G/HDSPA services?

I've heard and read a lot of stories where Orange have either just said no or have said yes we can do this but you will need to buy a 3G phone from us first?

If you're on PAYG just look for a 3G Orange PAYG SIM on eBay (they're usually £1 with no shipping cost). Then when you get it you can ring them up on 08000 790006, select the "keep your number" option and they'll set it up for you, or alternatively you can do it via your online account by selecting the "new phone" option and typing in the new SIM card number.

I had no problems replacing my 2G PAYG SIM with a 3G one, however I did have to buy £5 credit as if it were a new account.

I stated why I needed the SIM, "bought" it, and the shop assistant rang CS on my behalf to get it changed over. About 10 minutes later I rebooted my phone and noticed that the old SIM died. Changed over and bam, 3G.

I would assume that they would have a stock of SIMs for contract customers and could just change over.

My Dad wanted to do this on PAYG and they wanted to charge him.

They refused point blank to change my sim to a 3g one, both on the phone and in a number of shops. Even when I said I would cancel my account with them. So I did!

I wonder what they'd do if you wanted a MicroSIM for your iPhone or iPad. They'd probably bend over backwards to accomodate that.

If there is a policy that prevents them changing SIMs (that probably cost fractions of a penny each in the volumes they handle, and when they can send you tons of PAYG SIMs for free) that cause an even greater loss in revenue, than that's astounding.

Doesn't surprise me with the France Telecom-owned Orange. They seem to have removed everything that was good and innovative.

Same here had to do £5 top up was done in shop

unlike t-moble that wanted to charge £10 with nothing going on my card
