Heart Stations
Talk about lack of choice now. I can now receive Heart FM on the following frequencies, I live in Colchester, Essex.
96.1 FM Heart Colchester 96.3 FM Heart Essex 97.1 FM Heart Suffolk 102.6 FM Heart Essex 102.8 FM Heart Kent 103.1 FM Heart Kent 106.2 FM Heart London DAB Heart Essex Heart Kent Heart London a couple of years ago these were separate stations now all I can get is blooming Heart. This many Heart stations in one are is this some sort of record? |

Talk of lack of choice? Surely if you are getting Heart London you should also be getting Capital, Kiss, Smooth, Magic and Absolute on FM too? Maybe even Xfm. As for DAB there are other services on the multiplexs Heart is on especially the number you are receiving. Hardly lack of choice!

I put the below on the Mercury Herts thread but it fits better here.
Well I have to tell you we are almost beside ourselves with excitement here in Hertfordshire. Heart is coming - how wonderful - just what we needed. We have Heart 106.2 from London and what used to be Chiltern Radio so a third Heart will be a marvellous surprise and of great benefit to the local area. We are so excited many of us are getting up at 0500 so we can listen to the start of this 'brand new' radio station for Hertfordshire and the presenter list looks really exciting. Every four hours there is a different person who is going to play us 'more music variety' - we are going to have 24 hours of 'more music variety' or maybe Fred Smith has changed his name to 'Fred Smith with more music variety' I am going to listen all the time because I am sure more music variety must mean I may hear Frank Sinatra, the Beatles or Jethro Tull if I am patient. Mind you, a lady at work who fits into their target age profile told me she can only listen for an hour because more music variety actually means playing a very few songs over and over whilst continually repeating the phrase 'more music variety' Thank God for DAB - there is only one Heart on that whereas they are now cluttering up the FM band locally with the same few songs played relentlessly with no thought or imagination by presenters restricted to a few often repeated phrases interspersed with mindless drivel. So it is a very exciting time for radio in Hertfordshire. Paul |

Does this mean Mercury studios will go? Apart from Breakfast and Drivetime all the rest of the shows are networked from London. I see Chris Brookes is on Drivetime Sussex and Surrey, but he lives in Essex? Well he did when he was at Capital. Where will he broadcast from? |

I hope the transmitter engineer sets the AF switch over to 106.2, as they are more louder and stronger than 96.6 in Watford, so they won't even get a look in!

How did they pick the right ones to network the shows? Or was it lucky they were working for London Heart?

It's totally pathetic. I live in Oxfordshire and I can pick up Heart Thames Valley, covering places like Berkshire and Hampshire which are nowhere near where I live. I can also pick up Heart MK (which will no doubt be absorbed into Heart Beds/Bucks/Herts or Heart Northants, eventually), Heart Beds/Bucks/Herts, Heart Northants, Heart West Midlands 100.7 and ocassionally Heart London which all have the same boring presenters on air whose dreams of broadcasting on Radio 1 have probably been shattered and all stations play the same songs at the same time.
Hardly any local content or coverage like there was 8 years+ ago. I hope the government can do something about these Heart wrenching stations and revert them back to their former glory, by making them have more local content. Edit: Oh I see, Heart MK and Northants have already been absorbed into Heart Home Counties. Riduclous! |

How does the jingles and trailers work on all the stations? Obviously London 106.2FM plays " This Is Heart, Londons Heart" & the other play " This is heart, This is heart"..
Do they come from one point. Obviously the News, breakfast and drivetime trailers have to be right length to all finish at the same time. Could someone help? |

All this because Ashley Tabor needs to pay back his Daddies massive loan while it gathers interest. The more cost cuts made, the quicker the loan gets paid back! Simple! Pity listeners have to suffer in the mean time.

Were these stations any use before they were Heartified or do we have rose tinted glasses on? I largely gave up on local, commercial radio many years ago on account of it being shite! I'm sure there were good shows on good stations but there were many cheese merchants playing utter dross

oh ye there are some dodgy ones about with pre recorded shows and automation
but i just hate heart and i dont like the whole getting rid of the localness of stations with the whole network from London and yes its move with the times etc but im a firm believer that if a station is for serving local communities then it should do and not from London but there ya go

My other half likes waking up to Heart(Beds,Herts & Bucks) in the mornings. Needless to say when she goes out the door at 6.15 it's turned OFF. It's like listening to a vortex, awful awful stuff with a weekly playlist of 10 songs, and zero local content. Local radio is becoming much like the country's high streets, all looking and sounding the same.

This many Heart stations in one are is this some sort of record? On this point, I have been wondering if using the same name is going to boost audience within designated TSAs? For example, until this Monday, a RAJAR diary could have been filled out in Crawley to say that you listened to Mercury or Heart (106.2 / 102.4 / 103.1). Now, retained ex-Mercury listeners will record 'Heart' as the station that they listen to and will be bunched together with all those who are listening to 106.2, 102.4 and 103.1. Thus, the share of Heart Sussex / Surrey ought to increase somewhat on Mercury, particularly since London Heart 106.2 booms in to Crawley. Advertisers on Sussex/Surrey 102.7, however, might take a dim view of listeners being counted against 102.7 when they are actually listening to London 106.2. Above obviously assumes that RAJAR diarists don't have to record 'Heart London' or 'Heart Sussex and Surrey', 'Heart Kent' - that could get complicated. |

Now people will see Heart in the rajar diary and even if they listen to 106.2 2 it will probably go on the figures for the Brighten and Crawley station. What you should see in areas with significant overlap of stations is a reduction in the listeners to "other" in the diary. You're right that although you were able to pick up the neighbouring local stations this was not meant for you, did no service to your local area and was not supposed to give you listener choice. Its an accident that you were able to hear it. The station owner gets no credit whatsoever and can make no money from the fact that you are listening. Now that should change so the Heart audience should go up....In theory. |

Unifying the Heart brand across all of these stations underlines the fact that you have been listening to overspill from other areas, not 'choice'. Invicta wasn't for you and your listening to it did nothing for the bottom line of the owner. Your were, therefore (and this isn't meant to sound rude) a wasted opportunity for GCap / Global - you listened to their service, but not the right service

If this is the case then the txs should be turned down and ofcom should stop this stupid 400khz crap. Better idea, Ofcom should go and take up fishing and let radio be run by somebody that undersatnds what they are doing. |

You hate it, but you (I assume) are a bloke and the advertisers don't want you. Your other half, though, loves it and she's who the advertisers want. Moan all you like about Heart, but your other half is living proof that Global have got it right. |
