Just because a particular artist or song isn't played it doesn't mean it's been totally ignored or the HOM doesn't have a clue about music. Of course he does. But if research says 'Don Quixote' or 'Wide Boy' aren't popular or familiar enough stations won't play them.
Always remember "you will never get intro trouble for what you don't play".”
You picked two lesser known Nik Kershaw songs, both hits in 1985,after he had passed his peak of popularity. I would agree they probably aren't familiar enough. But in 1984 he had three masssive hits,Wouldn't It Be Good,I Won't Let the Sun Go Down On Me,and The Riddle. I would argue anybody who had their "high school days" in the 80s would recognise those songs. After all,on the Time Tunnel the presenters always urge the listeners to text in and say what they were doing back then, and what the records remind them of. So if it's a year in the early eighties that can only include listeners over about forty years old. Anybody else would be too young to remember,or not even born.
Even if they aren't considered suitable for the main playlist it surely wouldn't do any harm to give them an outing on a 1984 Time Tunnel. But the last time I heard a 1984 Time Tunnel.one of the records was Cyndi Lauper's Girls Just Want To Have Fun,as if that doesn't get enough airplay on Heart anyway.
I thought the Time Tunnel was a chance to hear a few records off the normal playlist for a change - but often, whatever year it is,it's pretty much the same records that get played. There are very few genuine surprises when I think,"What a great record,I've not heard that for ages."
"You will never get into trouble for what you don't play",well, fair enough. But it doesn't make for very interesting radio if programmers won't take a chance and just stick to tried and tested favourites all the time. I mean there's only so many times I want to listen to Don't You Want Me.
I shouldn't even be posting this,I'm supposed to have retired.
