Aah, I didn't read the latest RAJAR, you see. But even if Heart did add listeners, it still isn't necessary to hack the ends off for no reason. I will now recommend to everyone I know, to avoid Heart like the plague - and find an alternative.

Seems Real Radio is doing stuff increasingly the Heart way too, yesterday I heard Queen's "A kind of magic" and it was so badly hacked and shortened it sounded like someone couldn't even be bothered to do a proper edit of it and just spliced the end on after the song had run about 2/3 of its usual length. From memory you just hear the "T" at the start of "This rage that lasts a thousand years" and then straight into the outro, horrible edit.

Depends if that was programmed automatically into the desk or Toby doing it himself? There are many segways happening like that on Heart. Example Mr Mister - Broken Wings ( 4.48 but cut it at 4.20 ), Madonna - Open Your Heart and Pet Shop Boys - West End Girls.

It's not like Magic trying to clear the end of the vocals and segwaying as it ends. Heart trys to cram in as much music during certain shows.

That's the problem. Cramming in as much music as possible within the hour, means that the songs end up with hacked endings. Some more that you haven't picked up on: Starship - We Built This City (4'56 but segued at 4'28) and Daft Punk - Get Lucky (4'08 but Toby has segued it out as early as 3'25).

Most radio stations should be like Magic then. I haven't heard Magic as I'm unable to receive it at my location; however it seems a good idea to segue a song out once the vocals have finished. Not before then. Surely playing one or two songs less per hour would sound better, and more professional, than the hackings of Heart?

Nothing worse than songs going on for ages. 3min songs are just perfect, none of this 4min plus nonsense.

The average length for a song is approximately 3'30, and this is fine for most songs. But there will always be exceptions to this rule - and they should never be standardised with bad segues.

By the way, the radio edit of Passenger is about 3' 46. The radio edit of 'Nothing's Gonna Stop Us Now' is 4'07. Madonna's 'Vogue' is over 5 minutes but there is a radio edit that comes in at about 3'33.

In actuality, Heart tend to use the album versions more so than the radio edits. Definitely in the case of the Madonna song (though Heart hack that down anyway), and there isn't much difference between the radio edit and the album version of Passenger - Let Her Go. Take out the silence at the end and it's the same version.
And I know that Heart use the album version of Starship songs, since we've already had a debate on "We Built This City", and Heart chopping the 4'56 album version down to just 4'28.

I've done a little bit of clearing up as well.
Remember, radio stations don't always use radio edits, they can (and often will...) use the album version.

But there is no alternative in a lot of areas. Some people have no choice but to listen to the rubbish that heart churns out. They have killed off all the competition.

Yeah they might be playlists but heart edits whittle them down to well below 4mins thank god.

Unfortunately, that is so... the only thing there is is the BBC local radio, BBC Nationals, plus Heart! However, I'm quite lucky as I can get Capital too, and in some areas there are other stations too, like Kiss.

I'm sure that the Heartification of the stations was a bad thing...

I know you wasn't joking - because I know that you get bored of my posts about Heart's segues!
However, it isn't just about how many songs are cut short, it's about how much, and when a song is shaved by over half a minute, I can't help but complain...

Not all of them. The NTP on We Built This City is 4'28. Although I think that it's still too early, it's more than 4 minutes.
Though, to be fair, most of Heart's song are below 4 minutes - even with their dodgy segues - but there are sometimes exceptions.

And on that note, the only time you'll see me putting any more recordings on the forums is if I catch any more bad segues.
