My Vision box has completely packed up - unable to view On Demand content or set up recordings. I restarted the Home Hub and V-Box in accordance with the instructions on screen but now it just says "connection problem". I called BT but have been on hold for ages, which seems weird for this time on a Saturday night. Anyone know if there's a large-scale problem?

Thanks for posting.

Not great... Peak Saturday night!

As someone on the BT forum says, it's very bad design that the box relies on the BT servers / broadband even to watch Freeview channels. Even my TUTV box didn't do that!

Knew I should have come on here last night!

Would have saved me all that restarting etc etc.

At least I didn't bother ringing BT (you need to be 100% awake before you ring just so that you don't nod off halfway through ) and its all okay again today.

The helpline was clearly swamped with calls as it cut off after a few seconds of a recorded message saying they were busy.

It's clear that this was a national outage apparently caused by a "logon server".

The fact there was no information posted on any website by BT and they were leaving customers to find out for themselves is inexcusable.

Maybe they should invest more in infrastructure than flash and annoying adverts

so you need a BB cnnection to the server simply to wtach Freeview that comes down the aerial, that's a bit of a downer, and another reason to think hard about SS 1 & 2!

It needs the broadband connection when booting, not when watching freeview.

That's true but the problem last night resulted in the box being able to reboot and start properly which meant that even Freeview was unavailable.

This is true,

It's a preventative measure so that only BT vision can be used on BT broadband and to lockout on demand / recordings if you alter the box.

I too had a time once when the box wouldn't boot. Seems EPG wen't belly up back then for a day.

I think, the homehub should have a basic authentication key that it gets every x hours. and the vision box gets authenticated from that. thus if the main server wen't down. then although you loose on demand, the box would at least boot up to use its freeview and recordings

not long now though! SS comming and of this week!

This was the text of the email I received

Dear Customer,

As promised, here's an update on the problem we encountered last Saturday.

We're sorry if you weren't able to use video On Demand or turn on your Vision+ box. We've fixed the problem and are working hard to make sure it doesn't happen again.

As a thank you for your patience, we'd like to offer you three great movies to watch for only 1p each from 6pm Friday 30 July to midnight Sunday 1 August 2010.

You can choose from Sarah Jessica Parker and Hugh Grant in hilarious rom-com Did You Hear About The Morgans?, superb animated animal antics in cartoon classic Open Season, and eye-popping action with Cameron Diaz in Charlie's Angels: Full Throttle.

To watch the films on BT Vision - normally priced at £3.49 or less - go to On Demand > Film > Thank you from BT Vision. You can watch each film for 24 hours after you've chosen it.

If you have any further questions, or need to get in touch with us about your BT Vision service, please visit us here.

Best wishes,

Thanks... that looks interesting!

Presumably this 'offer' will be available to all BT Vision customers... not just those who were affected by the problem?
