1) Turn Data roaming off
2) log out of emails
3) turn cellular data network off
4) Log out of Facebook, Twitter etc
5) Turn Push off and fetch messages to Manual.

If you still get charged after this then people can start moaning

So basically instead of having one functional option in an operating system, you have to go through every bloody app (some people have hundreds), nice.

Sorry, I must have missed the bit where you explain why steps 2-5 are (should be) necessary...

Oh my god this is totally new information. Oh wait no its not

Extensively discussed HERE including the best fix which is to cripple your APN's before travelling abroad (or buy an international data bolt on of course )

So much for a premium phone from a company where stuff is supposed to "just work". Cripple the APNs on your £600 phone to ensure a bug/issue with its OS can't rack up a bill.

Throwing it off the bridge into water should also work. Doing the same to Jobs may help too.

Why did apple add the data on/off setting in iOS 4 ? Surely this is easier then changing the APNs ?

I thought the point about this particular fault was that people were being charged even though they had data roaming turned off... £1500 in one case

I had this happen to me when I went to Florida, found an extra £22 on my bill for data when I got back. I think I worked out when it happens. Its when you turn the phone ON it collects your emails, it's like it takes a few seconds after startup for the 'data roaming off' function to kick in. My advice would be to not turn your phone off when abroad, keep up on all the time.

Just turn off the cellular data when you dont need it on, problem solved. Unless you need constant access to your emails, theres not much point in having 3g on 24/7.

I agree they shouldnt be necessary, but just turning Data roaming off doesnt work regardless of what software version you are using. all apps and emails constantly try to connect to the internet to update/use location services/download emails etc.

A lot of apps when you first download them will ask "app would like to use push notifications" or "app would like to use your loaction" by answering ok that app will then connect to the network whenever possible to update etc.

My point is i didnt trust the data roaming option alone, i took it to the N'th degree but in the end i didnt get any additional charges.

Completley agree that people getting stung when they have turned this off is a disgrace, but its the world we live in. All companies are trying to get every penny they can from us, we just have to be vigilant to it.

It seems that turning off "data roaming" made no difference - people still got charged. You'd have thought that turning it off would do exactly that, not "connect for a few seconds and rack up a bill before the setting kicks in and disconnects".

Is there another option for data altogether? Seems very typically Apple fanboy to basically say "this setting that should work actually doesn't work, but that's not an issue, turn this setting off too, problem solved"

I wonder if Jobs will have a set of propaganda videos released showing other phones ignoring roaming settings, so he can blame it on "the industry".

All I do is turn of data roaming. I dont alter any other settings and i've never been charged.

I recently spent three weeks in the USA. I switched data roaming off before I went (this was before iOS4 and the additional option) and didn't get charged anything for data. I used the phone for texts and used the internet where wi-fi was available.

On a couple of occasions, I absent-mindedly tried to access apps that need the internet, when I wasn't connected via wi-fi. A box appeared, informing me that data roaming was switched off and asking if I wanted to enable it.

So for me, it seemed to work fine.

Or it could be typical scare mongering by non iphone users. Look through this thread and youll see people who show it isnt a universal issue. Gasp shock horror - they arnt all perfect. Find me a phone that is 100% perfect and you might have a point. Software will always have bugs - some major, some random and isolated to a few cases. Still, its fuel to the fire for those who have nothing better to do than complain about something they have no intention of using.

Apple is put on a pedestal by the company itself and its fanboys - they apparently manufacture pure perfection. When they seem incapable of getting the basics right they deserve all they get.

Other phones do not get the same level of worship, so issues are often glossed over. Having said that, inhibiting roaming works fine on my Android phone.

When Apple does well, the fanboys go on about how brilliant they are and like to shout from the hills. When they do anything wrong, they tell us all to shut up. Gotta love hypocrisy.

We certainly can't dispute the o2 forum thread, where people have been charged even though data roaming was turned off.

That would lead me to believe it may be an issue with 02 rather than across the board since you are only quoting an O2 source Could be wrong. Apple is put on a pedestal because they do make fantastic hardware wether or not you choose to believe that. Their hardware isnt perfect, however having been both a PC and WM/Android user before, switching to Apple makes everything that much easier and less of a hassle. Its not about being a fanboy, its appreciating something. So what if people want to ignore the obvious and praise them 100%? Thats their decision and you are free to ignore it. Sadly, it seems most people would rather go back and forth comparing things until theyre blue in the face. Different products do different things and suffer from different problems. Get over it.

Doubtful - Jobs (aka Cyberdyne Systems model 101) is equipped with state of the art circuitry that is water resistant. Even the state of the art PR Bullshit circuit would survive a dip in the ocean.

Hope you get a refund. Good luck!

Impossible. Its a known bug. I suspect the screen was clouded by the rose tinted Apple vision.

Who in their right mind would use a phone with a bare metal antenna on the outside?!

Oh..wait...thats right...Apple slaves would

So the daily fail and the torygraph. Well the credibility is rapidly on the increase there then

And here's why everything people read in the Daily Mail is the gospel truth

I get the impression thst you'd find fault with any paper that reports "unfavourably", or to rephrase, truthfully.

How ludicrous. I'm not an Apple fanboy by any means and I've never claimed that the iPhone is perfect. I too have read the horror stories about data roaming charges, and I was a bit worried about taking the phone abroad because of it. But it worked okay for me. As I said, I got a warning message if I tried to access data.

This is a well documented issue with the iPhone but it didn't happen in my experience. It has been around for a while so whether it's been rectified with firmware updates, I don't know.

But please, please don't tell me that I'm not being honest about my own experience.

Don't pay any attention Niles. The ones without iPhones don't actually pay any attention to owners - they just keep towing their own line.

If you're an iPhone owner and your phone works, then you're a fanboy, liar, affected by apple tinted glasses, living next to a mast or any other label that those who don't have an iPhone, wish to call you.

Hardly a time to talk about credibility when the device on topic is a phone with a external bare metal antenna

Buy a case or stop holding it "wrong".

As Jim Royle would say....credibility my arrrsse

It's a software bug, I can cope with that. It'll be fixed and no software company is immune to bugs.

This is nowhere near anything like the antenna issue. As long as people won't have to pay for the bug and O2 refund data usage as a result of it.
