From Zainab,s behaviour since Syed finally broke away from her controlling presence-the avoidance of Syed+Christian in the market, her subdued manner,I get the feeling that her main beef with Syed is not what he has done, but her loss of control of a situation that she was fighting but thought she would win.It must have been a bodyblow to her to find that SHE wasn,t the most important person in her son,s life, and that he would be prepared to lose his whole family for someone he loves more than her.
To blank someone is to avoid dealing with a problem-perhaps she really doesn,t know how to approach matters now that Syed is FINALLY his own man and no longer needs her approval to live his life as he wishes.Of course Syed will be hurt by her dismissive manner-but he has made his choice, one he doesn,t regret as he told Tam.He must have known this was going to be the situation, yet his desire for Christian was too strong to deny.
If Zainab EVER wants any sort of relationship with her son again she is going to have to accept his choices, accept he is still her son, whoever or whatever he is.It,s early days-I don,t defend her actions but she is hurt and lashing out in her own destructive way.Syed has the comfort of the man he loves,Zainab has a big empty hole in her life that she carn,t come to terms with-yet.
In a strange sort of way,I actually feel sorry for Zainab-a mother who wished SO VERY MUCH for her firstborn, but by her own destructive behaviour has lost him and doesn,t know how to get him back.Very sad”
Great post. Yes to BIB! I agree, a lot of Zainab's problem is having to acknowledge that, in the end, Syed did not choose her (and the family). It is a bitter pill for her to swallow and I think she is just avoiding having to face it at the moment.
