Yeah. I can barely even remember him back then, tbh? I rewatched the old clips and stuff and it's largely 'meh', though the stuff with Masood and Zainab was pretty good. I think his character was left pretty generic, in case they chickened out of the gay storyline, and then they could pretty much do what they wanted with him.

I know, he's the complete opposite of a bad boy, he's too lovely for his own good and so is Christian, they don't deserve their crappy family's.

Just jumping in here, so sorry if it's part way through. I was different here. I expected Syed to be the bad boy but very early on he showed he had more depth and was more interesting than that.
First I thought he was going to use his family and because Zainab was my favourite character I was wary for her. But in their early talks I wasn't so sure, in that cafe scene for example he really missed his family but seemed to understand he deserved his punishment. OK it could have been for show at that point, so because of the build up they gave him it was safer to mistrust him!. But then even when he was desperate to come home he drew the line at thanking his dad for taking the blame and I really liked that. Then when he forgave Tam he'd won me over. I always like a little bit of a bad boy anyway so I wouldn't have wanted a complete goody two shoes anyway though! Plus he's gorgeous so I cut him some extra slack.

I did like the scene where Masood throws the mobile at the wall when he finds out Syed has been speaking to Z. It is so obvious during those scenes that there is a hint of jealously there...and resentment.

I wish they would explore it...so Masood was cold and distant towards Syed when he was younger...

I think he was literally alone, and felt very alone. He was only a teenager, had no qualifications *assumes* so to just make one side of his life easier, he probably thought, 'my life is complicated and difficult enough' - he spoke to Syed of 'taking the easy route' so I think this is what it was.

And yes, asyousay, a bit of a d*ck but he wouldn't love a man, he didn't love himself so he had to transfer his love onto material objects - money, fun, etc. It's common unfortunately.

I agree there seems to be a big personality shift with Syed - I keep trying to look for telling looks when his mother talks about Amira before the first kiss, but I never see anything that looks like he's thinking things through. But that fourth one-night stand was probably a while ago and he's probably hidden all of those thoughts away, thinking he's "safe" now as he has a girlfriend who he's convinced himself he's attracted to and there's no man who's awakening those feelings in him.

They did decide on the gay s/l for Syed when he first came onto the show, but they were really trying to hide it which is why they didn't have any implications I think. Still, it would have been nice to see him and Christian interacting more, like in that scene where Syed quickly walks past Christian in the office in the unit, without saying anything to him. It's hardly giving anything away if he just says "hey", is it?

Would have just been nice to see a friendship build up happen over more episodes than just one or two but on the other hand I can understand how they wanted to keep it as well hidden as possible.

I've always interpreted the talk in the pub, where he grabs Syed's arm - when he says "I had the same choices once" - it sounds to me like it was a long time ago, I am imagining young, 20 maybe? But realised it was a mad idea, and decided to be true to himself. So this is why I always thought there was an element of 'rescue fantasy' in Christian's early falling in love with Syed. I don't mean this in a detrimental way at all, I think he wanted to save him from that horrific pain that he was going to put himself through. But he didn't understand the intense cultural pressure that was even greater than what he experienced.
