I've just bought a iphone 3g from ebay, it's locked to o2 but I would like to unlock it to use with my current contract sim. How do you go about unlocking the phone? I see that on the o2 website you can fill in a form if the phone is a contract phone, as i'm not the contract holder and he has upgraded and is keeping the sim for his new mobile would I be able to do this? Would it be easier to jailbreak the phone? Which is the best way to do this?

You could try asking O2 if it can be done as it was a contract phone originally.

Or you could get a PAYG SIM from O2 & stick at least £15 on it.

Best to ask O2, but I think doing it officially would be better than Jailbreaking it to then Unlock it that way.

Your iPhone 2G, 3G and 3GS can be unlocked at anytime free of charge. If you unlock your handset and put a non-O2 sim into it, you will still have to honour the remainder of the minimum term of your contract.

Pay & Go customers

You can unlock your iPhone 2G, 3G or 3GS for a one-off cost of £15. The payment for this will come from the money topped-up on your phone.

But if you unlock your iPhone less than 12 months after you bought it, we'll take off the free Web & Wi-Fi Bolt On that we added for the first 12 months.
What do I need to do?

First, complete the unlocking form. It will take up to 14 days for your iPhone to be unlocked and we'll text you to confirm the unlock request.

Then place a non-O2 sim into the iPhone and connect to iTunes via a USB cable. iTunes will confirm that the iPhone has been successfully unlocked.

Just a quick question, do they take the £15 straight away or when they have unlocked the phone?

This is easy No need to pay £15, Jailbreak it using Spirit http://spiritjb.com/ then once done go into Cydia go to manage hit the source button then hit edit and add and enter this http://repo666.ultrasn0w.com once thats done return to cydia and search for Ultrasn0w and download and install, once done your unlocked.

Well the phone is finally unlocked! Got an email this morning saying they couldn't do it as the phone hadn't registered on their network, was told to make a few calls and contact them in 24 hours. So I replied to them saying i had been making calls for a couple of days and that the phone should be registered by now. Got a reply around 3ish this afternoon saying it was unlocked!! So took less than 24 hours to get unlocked!!
