My daughter has wired up an old turntable to a new (ish) hi-fi but the vinyl volume is low. Deck is SONY PS-333 (80's-90's) and stereo is CP33 sony micro hifi.

Is deck too heavy' for micro hi-fi? Does she need another bit of kit?

Is the deck connected to an input marked "phono"?

If not, it may be going into a line-level input, and the signal from a record deck needs to be amplified by a phono stage first.

If there isn't a dedicated phono input, you'll need a phono pre-amp.
They come up on ebay now and again...here's one:

Hope this helps.

This is an important issue for anyone wanting to play records on modern hifi.

Many hifi's have spare inputs on the back, but they are only for things like tape, cd, dvd, and so on. Record players use a low power signal, but the wire and plugs look the same. This low power feed from a record player requires a specific low voltage input to work - often marked "Phono". For those hifis with just a regular input, you can purchase an adaptor box to fix the problem.
