I bet HTC Desire owners don't have and will never will have this problem. Apple are a bunch of control / standardisation freaks. I've always said it. Only now it seems is that attitude biting them on the bum.

Desire owners will have a whole different raft of problems. They will wait months to have a new software level available and then have to fight with their network to get that branded version approved and rolled out.

I love my 3GS on 4.0 - much better than 3.1.3 for usefulness.

Upgraded to 4.0.1 and lost signal - went from 5 bars 3G everywhere in house to 1 bar 3G / No Service in all but front room - and couldn't make calls without numerous attempts.

Moved back to 4.0 and all is well again.

Advice - Don't touch 4.0.1 with a bargepole.

20db fyi is massive.

And the anand article was hugely flawed in that he didnt use any lab gear or an isolated room, unlike CR.”

As i previously said the 20db drop is a mixture of the detuning effect and attenuation. If you put your finger on the exact location of the antenna on any phone you will get attenuation this is physics and not unique to the iphone. The detuning effect however is and is equivalent to a 9db drop.

That said it's fixed with a case, so if you plan to use a case don't worry about it. If you don't want to use a case you could use InvisibleSHIELD side armour which would also get rid of the problem. With this said if you at least get 3 bars then this is a non issue as you wont drop a call even if you death grip.

Make sure you do a fresh install of 4.0.1, not from backup. Also completely disable spotlight. It should help but nothing will bring back iOS3 speeds without downgrading or possible 4.1.

I will note that if you have the latest version of iTunes 9.2.1 the guide doesn't work.

Not sure about the windows version but it worked for me on a Mac on this version of iTunes.

I posted here a while ago on the new iphone update for advise

I have the 3g and never did the update due to reading so many negative reports!

I even approached staff in the Apple stores whom in a round about way said "if you are happy with the way it works now, leave it"

So my question is, my contract does not expire until September 2011, will the phone be usable right up until then, minus the 4.0 update?

You won't be able to use apps that were built for 4.0, but other than that you should be OK. It's possible that if there's some bug in OS it will only be fixed for 4.0, but I'd say stay with what you have. There's enough time till September 2011, there will be several 4.0 updates till then, maybe in one of them they'll get it right.

Yes it is unique to this phone

Its the ONLY MOBILE to date, that been made with a bare metal antenna on the outside of the device!!

That therefore allows for conductivity between the two antennas, which can result in huge reduction in call quality, large drops in data speed and the combined effect, as you put it, results in a 20db drop

Not a very clever design is it?

Yet none of this matters if you use a case which I would recommend on a £500 device anyway, the plus point is this won't cost you any extra.

Of course it matters. It forces people to use a case, when they shouldnt have to.

And its not something you have to do with any other mobile, even cheap £20 ones!

Surely its obvious?!

Quick question, what does any of this have to do with the iPhone 3G. Ah as I thought.......

On topic, there are some rumours that the 4.1 beta 2 seed that was released last night has fixed the sluggishness some iPhone 3G peeps are experiencing so hopefully it will be fixed once 4.1 is released to the public

That's good news, I will wait till 4.1 is out then before I try downgrading.

Apple are 'looking into it', apparently. http://www.macrumors.com/2010/07/28/...-on-iphone-3g/

Think I'll hold out til at least 4.1 before going for a 'downgrade'.

Lots of people use phones without cases, I use my iphone without a case. I just make sure that I always put it in my left pocket and keys and coins in the right pocket.

What's the point of a brilliant design line putting 2 slabs of glass in between a stainless steel band if you are going to put a case on it.

Apple themselves noted in the press conference that people didn't want to use cases with their 4G.

So a case should be a choice for people. Nobody should be forced in to getting and using an accessory just to fix a design issue with a device.

I agree with you, it is a workaround and not a fix to the problem which should never have existed, anyone who thinks that a pair of external antennae is a good idea needs their brain examining which is why no-one did it before! Even Apple's engineer said it was a bad idea or so I read.

I do use my iphone in a case but that is to protect it, I don't really think it would damage easily anyway, it would just cost me a lot if I broke it.

Its not a fix, its a patch....on a £500 device

Ahhh I see...special paint. Yes it all makes sense now. Suddenly the "special paint" is unavailable and manufacturing grinds to a halt...coincidentally around the same time as AntennaGate”

Anandtech article has more expertise than cr. Cr is known for its tests but they generally report shallow findings. I mean really, look at their tests on stereo equipment. No ones debunked or torn apart anandtechs findings yet.

I do sound cynical but this normally means they will wait a good while in the hope that it drops off the radar.
Maybe iAd income will more than doubled because of the 3G update. And it certainly mean that a downgrade option is unlikely to be an official solution.

Recent reports seem to suggest that turning off spotlight search may improve iOS4 on the 3G.

If you remove the spotlight search it can speed up

settings--> general --> home button -> select spotlight search and un-tick all the searches. I never really used spotlight, so it wasn't an issue for me.. It's a lot better now”

many thanks for this Brilliant advice, it really helped by 3g

Ive just installed OS4 on my 3G and my phone is so much quicker. Quite please with it. The only gripe is that when I type on a webpage such as a forum page the text is quite sticky- im usin the keyboard yet the text is a bit slower on screen. ?
