i got a phone ages ago when the n97 came out from vodafone on a 22m contract, however i've had it just over a year now but would like to get my hands on the iphone, so i'm wondering if i can swap my current contract phone for a new contract phone?

Not easily as far as I am aware. You would probably have to buy out your existing contract.
