typical Eastenders
So some Eastenders will perish and 16 to go by the end of the year. Of course no hint of even 1 little Ferreira leaving us, it looks like they're the only family to stay intact!
Are they picking on ME personally?? The Ferreiras are so awful I thought they might have reduced the quality so much that the show might go to BBC3. It's a disgrace innit. If you send Kelly and Kareena off to a party island and only one comes back, then really truly and completely , it should have been Kelly saved. If they're trying to 'prove the nation wrong' about the Ferreiras, and halving ratings in the process, if I was LB I'd say 'al right, you were right, i was wrong. sorry' and kick them out yesterday. |

Eastenders will never get better no matter what happens. Why Brooke Kinsella has been axed I don't know why because she is a brilliant actress over Pooja Shah.
None of them can act and its a disgrace they are being kept in. In fact I see the restricted cast being the end of the show, because its just going to struggle and struggle in the ratings. |

If 16 characters do go, EastEnders had better work their socks off to create some really good families that will be long lasting...not a 4 year stint like the Slaters or 1 year by the Ferreiras. I mean take the Slaters...how many more believable storylines can they have? Their last few storylines have been complete rubbish.
On top of the bad storylining and writing, EastEnder has no real "fabric". OK you'll always be able to turn the telly on and know Pauline and Dot will be there...but who else? When watching Corrie though, most of the cast have been there for years. Tracy Barlow has grown up on the show, as have Sarah, Nick and David. We've seen Steve McDonald develop from teenager to grown-man and many other cast members lives unfold before our eyes. People have grown up on EE too, but only a few, Ian Beale and Martin Fowler and I think that's about it. The remaining long-term characters on EE are washed up and have very little to offer storyline wise - that's probably why Dot is getting cancer cause they've got nothing else to do with her, and Martin and Sonia's really believable wedding. There's a weird mixture of living situations, and not one 'real' family. Again I'll use Coronation Street as an example...yes families have been turned upside down over the years...but at the end of it they're still together. The Websters, the Barlows, the Grimshaws, the Platts, the Harrises, the Peacocks, Jack & Vera, Roy & Hayley etc. What real family-unit is there in EastEnders? A few remaining Fowlers, the Slaters and the dreaded Ferreiras. Couples have been split up leaving stand-alone characters with nothing to do - that's why this clean-out is so necessary. |

Very well sad! As Keiran Roberts (former Emmerdale and Corrie producer) said: ''You're constantly breaking down families and couples for storylines, but at the same time you are always reconstructing the family units so there are limited 'stand alone' characters'.
Let's hazard some guesses as to who these 16 are. I would say: Gus, Juley, Spencer (praying), Minty, Billy, Charlie, Sam, Derek, Vicki, Andy, (struggling to think of anyone else left), Yolande?, Robbie, Kate, Chrissie, Garry and Bobby. That was a very hard list to compile as I think there are only about twenty other people besides them (of which the Slaters and Ferrieras account for 9). |

I agree with Gus, Juley, Spencer, Derek, Andy, Robbie, Minty, Kate, Chrissie, Garry and Bobby. I am in two minds about Sam, I can never take Kim Medcalf seriously cause to me Daniella Westbrooke will always be Sam Mitchell no matter who the actress is, but I would like to see if the Mitchells can be successfully brought back.
I'd like to add Sonia to my list aswell. I think that, as a producer would say, her character has 'run its course' I don't think giving the Fowlers something to do is enough justification to keep her in the show - even though she is a good actress. Hmm who else? This is hard. If Yolande goes I'd like to see Patrick go with her...if he didn't we'd have another stand-alone character with little to do. So there's 2 more. I would like to say Mickey has potential but considering the dire "comedy" writing he stands no chance. So I'll add him to the list as well. I'll throw the rest of the Slaters in for luck. But please EastEnders...when you make your new characters...please, please, please...no babies! |

Excellent analysis Ben.
You're right, there are very few 'families'. I was just thinking the other day how lucky Corrie are that they have characters like Sarah and Steve, who have 'grown up' on the prog, they must be doing something right that these actors want to stay. To the ones you mention on EE, I would add Sonia, who I think is still an asset, although they no longer seem to know what to do with her. Her character has a lot of potential (if they get some decent writers on the case). EE was based around good families when it began - it needs to reconstruct some, but it just doesn't seem to have the knack of finding the right plots, actors or writers nowadays. But bear in mind, the 'story' I read said "UP TO 16" and that may include Lynn, who we know is going, and Kat who will be on mat leave. The only arrivals I know about are Micki's family. And the last thing we need is more Mickis. |
