I've just started using a video projector for watching DVDs and TV.

When I connect the DVD player via straight s-video, the picture is fine. If I connect the Sky Digibox via a scart to s-video cable, the picture suffers from patterning on strong colours.

Any ideas on the cause of this, is it fixable?

Thanks for any suggestions.

...and presumably it's not one of the few sky boxes with an s-video socket? Probably the cable not the projector, if DVD works. Can you connect to your telly/some other display using the s-video/rgb cable arrangement? Do you get the same problems when you hook up sky via composite (this will look pretty bad and fuzzy though)? Long cables, lots of connections and any rgb-svideo conversion is bound to degrade the signal and leave it prone to interference.

unfortunately it hasn't got an svideo out, just 2 scarts. Just tried connecting the svideo to the tv, and the picture had no patterning (wish I'd thought of that) - so I guess that means the cable is ok?

I am interested in having an svideo out on the Digibox though, it might help improve the picture. Do you know which boxes have this? I would like to see if I could pick one up on Ebay or something (mine is an old Panasonic)

Think the grundigs are the only boxes with s-video sockets. Did you try messing around with the digibox and projector picture settings (and make sure the projector and digibox are same aspect ratio)?

Confused as to why things going wrong when you say it's not the cable, and the dvd via s-video works fine - after all your dvd player and digibox both output the same 600-odd-line interlaced video signal (apart from the quality on sky being blocky and noticeably bad on large displays), the projector won't be able to tell the difference.
