Old character returns to Corrie (spoiler)
I see from the story on the front page that Ray Langton is to return to the Street.
I don't know if anyone else on this board was watching Corrie that long ago and can remember him? He was meant to be a bit of a hearthttrob, and is Tracy's real dad -- they're not dissimilar I think this could be a great idea, it will get Ken all riled up and anything that makes Ken look like he's sucking lemons is alright with me. |

Sounds good. Might also be an opportunity to give Tracy a sibling or two.

I'm remember Ray Langton (how old do I feel now
) I never thought of him as a heart throb, but I was very young at the time (Honest!). He worked in the builders yard with Len Fairclough and got together with Deidrie when she went to be their secretary (I think). This could be a very nice idea indeed, and, as you said, Ken sucking lemons is always a good thing.

Yeh I was very young during the Ray Langton days too
![]() Re the heartthrob issue, I think it was along the lines of 'Charlie', i.e. there is room for debate about it He left Deirdre after he had an affair. I just looked up his profile, I'd forgotten what an exciting life he led - trying to shag Lucille Hewitt, Elsie Tanner and Deirdre, he ought to have got a medal .http://www.corrie.net/profiles/chara...ngton_ray.html |

Just wait until Blanche discovers - she'll hit the roof going by the contempt they had for each other before!

Sounds great! It's been a while since we've seen Ken and Deirdre, and this looks like just the thing to throw them back into the limelight.

I do remember Blanche taking a major dislike to Ray (quite rightly) so it would be great to see her reaction to him returning. And I can see Deirdre falling for his dubious charms again - she's always desperate to get away from ... how did Blanche put it? - Base Camp Ken.

Deirdre's loyalties to 'our Kenneth' will be tested once again when Ray strutts back into the street; but now that her glasses have diminished, will she still see through him and his wicked ways?
Didn't Ray appear in the Viva Las Vegas Corrie video a few years back? |

If Ray is coming back it would be good if he'd become some vulgar millionaire and could really rub Ken's nose in it. I too think there would be mileage in giving him subsequent children.

His profile does say he appeared in Viva las vegas, not something I am familiar with (fortunately by the sound of it!)
I hope he agrees to come back -- I saw the 'soap woman' (no idea who she is) on This Morning today and she said he is in talks with producers. He's now a bank manager -- reprising Ray will be a bit of a change for him .

He ran off to Holland didn't he with that very tall black lady (can't remember her name but the actress has been in loads of things since). I suppose he was quite good looking in a way, but to me at the time, he seemed quite old. What amazes me though, is that Dreary Barlow/Langton whatever is supposed to be the same age as I am but looks and acts 10 years older! I wonder if there will still be some spark there. I wouldn't think so - did he ever pay child support? |

That's old age catching up with you I suppose. I think I remember that Ray was originally going to run off with his bit on the side to Holland, then wanted Deidrie to go, at the last minute she backed out, so he did run off with the other girl. However, I was quite young at the time so may be remembering that completely wrong. |

Some of you have mentioned Blanche from years ago. Was Blanche then played by the same person who plays her now?

Thanks. So how long a gap was there between her leaving the street and coming back a few years ago?

The character who Ray had an affair with was called Janice Stubbs and was played by Angela Bruce. I don't think that he left Weatherfield with her, I think he went alone to Holland. I am SURE she did Playdays on Children's BBC!
When Ray appeared in Viva Las Vegas, I think he was a croupier in one of the Casinos, and I honestly remember reading somewhere that he was gay! But I am probably wrong. Blanche left the Street in 1976 with "the original" Londoner Dave Smith to live in Kennilworth. She returned to the show regularly for things like Weddings and Funerals. She moved back to Weatherfield in 1999. Blanche is played by Maggie Jones, but has been played by 2 actresses. The first actress, Patricia Cutts, killed herself after only 2 episodes as Blanche! It was the first time in a soap that an adult character had been replaced with another actress - happens all the time now! |

Certainly would make me watch the programme again.
Ray Langton returning could create some great storylines. A likely Zimmer frame-type punch-up with Ken Barlow over D and T could ensue..a la KB and MB of some years back. Anne Kirkbride seemed overcome with emotion when Neville Buswell turned up near the end on her This Is Your Life show a few years back, so hopefully, there will be some on-screen chemistry between them as actors. Neville Buswell left Corrie in the late 70s, and went off to the States to live with his wife. He eventually gave up acting and had to look for alternative forms of employment. Granada lost touch with him completely and he stopped picking up his residuals for some years. Eventually, the press tracked him down and found him to be working as a croupier. He gave that up at some point and then became a bank manager. As the poster above mentioned, NB did appear briefly as Ray on one of those Coronation Street Special One-Off Storyline Videos about ten years ago, when Jack and Vera went to Vegas to play the machines. I seem to recall they'd made Ray gay in that show, so they best forget they made it, unless they want Ray Langton to pursue Todd and not Deirdre when he returns to the Street!! More details of Ray Langton's thrill-packed life can be found in his profile, which gives links to Neville Buswell's, and Blanche's, and a pic of the actress who played Janice.
I hope this all happens, I'm already looking forward to Blanche giving him a left hook http://www.corrie.net/profiles/chara...ngton_ray.html |

The "Viva Las Vegas" video had Fiona and Maxine & Jack and Vera staying at the Rio hotel just off the Vegas strip. Jack and Vera were having a meal at the Stratosphere tower if I remember correctly and Ray was a waiter. Vera states "By 'eck, Ray Langton!".
Don't seem to remember him being gay in it though.... Funny how none of these "hijinks" were ever mentioned in the street on their return. Why didn't Vera say "by eck, you'll never guess who we bumped into" etc etc.... |
