Hi Everyone
My bro inlaw asked me to look at his Foxsat today because he said it started up on Sunday as if it was going to record, this was around 5.00pm just as he was going out.
He told me nothing was set to record at this time so today
I check all his recordings and there was none for Sunday.
I also looked at the "power on" settings and it was not disabled but it never had any time set to power on.

Today my Foxsat did exactly the same it started up but there was no recordings set for today at that time 5.00pm.
Has there been any updates or software version scheduled for this time ?
The "power on" settings on my unit were not disabled I am sure, but there was definently not a 5.00pm time setting to power on.
I am not sure now if the unit remained switched on or one of the family switched it off will watch again tomorrow.
Anyone got any ideas?
cheers

I haven't seen that happen on mine. I wonder is it tempoarily booting up to grab the latest EPG data and will then close down again. It has to do that at some point I guess to know about schedule changes. Could be that.

I've noticed spurious starts at all times of the day and evening (but not frequently).

The fact that the box tends to stay on for more than a few minutes seems to indicate that it's not just grabbing EPG data. I've checked the media list when I next turn the box on and nothing has been recorded.

Me too.. but put down to sporadic power hiccups..
an underlying problem here as well i guess.. but unlikely to surface unless it can be linked to specific annoyance..Makes you wonder though.. Surely Humax would already be aware of.. or wonder what is causing this.. as it may be a fire hazard for all we know??

Can the OP explain what he means by firing up. If he means the display lights up and shows the time this is normal in the 15 mins before a recording is due if it was set using accurate or series recording. The hdr is awaiting the start of recording flag from the scheduled epg time.

Hi Graham
All I mean by firing up is the Foxsat HDR starts up just like it does if preparing to record. I know the humax has to switch on prior to recording probably to allow time for the EPG to populate.
But as I said the unit is switching on but doing nowt.
Did not switch on randomly today but has worked correctly tonight to record Gardeners World on BBC HD.

It's not for the epg to populate, a full new epg takes about 30 seconds it's to allow the box to wait the change of running status transmitted by the broadcaster to say the programme has started, in this way an early start of up to 15 mins can be accomodated. THe only logical reason I can think of is that somehow an inadvertent watch reservation had been set up.

My box is doing this as well .
I have a feeling the BBC are mucking around with mheg on the internet ,possibly trying to implement setting up recordings remotely just a guess .

That's interesting, pretty certain Bob-Cat said wake on lan won't work so if it's due to outside influence it must be using the same procedure for updates but I always thought the box has to wake itself to do this.

Well who knows ? .
Its a mystery to me and probably to bob too , as I said a guess but I cannot think of any other logical explanation as I did not switch it on ,and to my knowledge the other posters did not switch theirs on either.
Or it might be sky trying to undermine freesat.
Just kidding.

Unless the Humax [or PC] contacts an external server (when it's firewall will allow responses to be passed to that device) - there is no way this would work - your router will just drop the packets unless it has been set up to pass a port / series of ports (or all ports) to a certain device.

I have had occaisions where TV's and other boxes either changed channels of went in to standby in the past - caused either by room bulb expiring, lighting, or even perhaps by someone using a remote across the street.

Bit too much of a coincidence for more than 1 box at the same time though

It would be interesting to see if the affected have a matching series recording set. Just a theory may be there's a inadvertent matching series crid at the problem time and the box waits up to await the programme start which never comes. Looking at the recording schedule about 16:00 would be interesting

I wonder if it's a random thing as a result of not having power on/off set to disable without a time entry. Mine is set to disable and never seen anything like this. Also wonder if being random this might be a cure for the power cut problem.

My box started turning on for no apparent reason around 1700 each day
I checked the settings and found I had enabled Auto Power on, (when looking for ways around the power cut problem), but had not set a time
I reset 'power on' to disable and it hasn't haoppened since
