Hi guys, I've just moved into a flat that is part of a larger complex. The previous tenants have moved out and have kept their BT phone number. Basically i'm a bit confused by it all. The BT line is still open (to my knowledge) but i'm not sure how i'd go about getting a new number, and all the deal with line rental etc.

Basically i want to get Sky Broadband/TV/Phone and i don't want to spend loads of money on things I don't need, but i presume i have to get a line with BT before doing any of that first?

EDIT - the landlord has already installed a dish and the facilities for Sky (lots of cables coming out of the wall!)

Thanks for any help - bit confused!

Tom.

Hi there,

there are a few options for you.

Get Sky TV,Broadband,Sky Talk and Sky line rental: For this you pay Sky everything, and you do not have to go through BT.

Get Sky TV,Broadband and Sky Talk but pay line rental to BT: This is option is if you contact BT first. By taking this option, you can benefit on calls to 0845 and 0870 numbers at no extra cost by dialling 1280 before the phone number you call.

Get Sky TV,Broadband BUT BT for phone service, BT Anytime calls offers unlimited calls to UK landlines that begin 01,02,03,0845 and 0870 for £4.95 plus £12.50 line rental.

To contact BT Customer options ring 0800-800-150

If there is a dial tone on the line already, then BT or Sky will not charge you for reconnection.

If there isn't there maybe a small fee but not the £125 fee, the £125 fee is only charged when a lot of work needs to be carried out or a fresh installation.

Benefits of paying line rental to BT:

Option to use 18185 discount phone service
Option to choose the phone provider you want
Easy number portability just incase you move or change to cable.
Cheap calls to Mobiles and 0845 and 0870 numbers.

If you want to pay line rental to Sky, Sky can set up the line for you

Hope this helps

Thanks, that's a lot of help!!!

Don't i still need a phone number to do all that with Sky though? I presume at the minute i technically don't have one, as they have switched it to their new house?

Thanks again.

Wrong.

Sky Talk now uses BTW's WCLI so using the 1280 prefix has no effect (i.e. it would be impossible to send calls via BT even though you paid line rental to them and, on the face of it, had their Unlimited Weekend calls plan too).
